The Blue Water Bridge
06 August 2014
An early 7:00am departure saw us leaving the shelter of River Street Marina and navigating our way back under the bascule bridges of the Black River. We were excited and a little apprehensive to dip our toes in the big lake, and to navigate under the Blue Water bridge with its strong current and counter currents.
After getting some tips from local sailors we decided to hug the Canadian coast as we drew nearer to the big bridge.
We started out travelling at 4mph in the river, and while we drew closer to the bridge our speed approached 7mph! Great tip to hug the coast, however we quickly experienced the strong current from the water flowing out of Lake Huron and slowed to only 1.4mph while directly under the bridge. Luckily we motored through and slowly increased our speed once we reached the lake.
