Friday 12th Oct turning point
28 October 2007 | South of the Equator
Alan
09.37 Spotted a tanker on the horizion to the south of us. Visible for about 10 minutes.
Reality time. The trip has started well and we had both settled down for a good trip. All felt good. However the initial uphoria has dispersed and we were now more pragmatic. Time for a reassessment of where we are and where we are going.
Travelled 130 Kn used 65 litres of fuel.
Rate 2 KN per litre
Distance covered approx 5.65 KN/Hour.
Total distance 1900/5.65 = 345 hours. Maybe more with counter currents in the North East Indian Oceean
We had remaining 700 litres. Will get us 1400 Kn.
Karachi 1900. Thats a short fall of 25% without allowing any contingencies. Including counter winds, cross and advers currents. Also no wind no sailing.
No wind and no current. Not what the satellite was telling us. 'Do-able' but not in 10-12 days.
Time to realise we are not going to Karachi on this trip.
What about the Maldives or Shalah in Oman. Both 'do-able' but what then. Both of us decided this was not going to work. Well not in our time frame. Next time.
Best go back.

Well we did get a good sunset if nothing else.
