The Glenn Highway connects Anchorage to Valdez.
It joins the Richardson Highway for the last 120 miles or so, traversing the Tompson Pass before the final descent into Valdez.
None of the books could have prepared us for the sheer beauty of this drive.
We seemed up on top of the mountain one minute and then down in the depths of the valley alongside a fast flowing river, and then, just as we thought it couldn't get any better, we rounded a corner to find the Matanushka Glacier in all its splendor draping itself over and down the slopes of another mountain.
We broke the drive up with a stop in Copper Basin ...
and that was gorgeous too!
Our campsite was right on the banks of the Klutina River that flows into the famed Copper River.
Nev couldn't get over the fact that the river usually flows at 14 mph and they catch 60-70lb King Salmon here - I could see his mind ticking and his mouth salivating at the thought of this challenge!!!
We walked in the fishermens footsteps down to the Copper River in the morning...
Such lucky fish we are 😊
