We sailed away from Vuda Marina yesterday for the last time and are now on the 2nd night of the passage to Vanuatu. We will miss Fiji greatly, it's a wonderful place and would take more time than we had to explore all of it. We had something precious fall into the water at the marina the day before we left. Kara was at our friend Steve's boat, about to jump on where his bow meets the concrete pier, and while shouting for him ,she somehow stumbled and fell in, bumping up against the sloped concrete on her descent. It didn't' help that it was low tide. Uwe noticed commotion over at Steve's boat, but had no idea Kara was the one creating the commotion. Even the usually soft spoken Fijians were shouting and a few people from nearby boats saw her fall. But she did the right thing, she managed to tread and keep herself afloat until Steve came out and saw what was going on, he quickly jumped in to the rescue. Poor little thing, she had a bit of a fright and was scratched up somewhat over her body. But she's a-okay now, she's eating icecream and jumping into the pool again! Another story she can tell some day. The day before departure is always hectic. I had to go to town and provision, transfer everything on the boat, and then stow it away in places that don't exist. I prepared some food in 85 degree galley for the passage ahead, did the laundry, tidied everything away, Uwe washed down the boat, filled the gas bottle, and filled up with fuel. Mike and Barbara from Arabella also left with us. Yesterday being the 1st day out had us all nauseous. The seas were lumpy, the ride was bumpy, and we were all a tad grumpy. Kara barfed, Uwe barfed (a first for him, most unusual), I wanted to barf but had no luck. The wind is not from the right direction, nothing new there! But we made 150 miles in the first 24 hour period, under sail alone, not bad. We have not touched the sails since outside the pass in Fiji and have not had the need to motor. Sometimes we look at our speed rising as high as 8 knots. Today's conditions are slightly better, allowing me to sit at the computer for a brief moment before going up for air again. It's a southern swell, average speed of 15 knots, gusting up to 22 knots. It's hard to be motivated do anything in these conditions, we just sit and hold on. The not so pleasurable part of crusing. Our destination in Vanuatu, is the southern Island of Tanna, at Port Resolution. We are excited to arrive, and have a chance to climb to the world's most accessible volcano, Mt, Yasur. We should get in there Saturday afternoon, all going well.
