Back in the USA

After our month on a mooring in Hope Town we departed and headed to Treasure Cay to stage for a sunrise run thru Don't Rock pass, hence the name Don't, many cruisers opt to use the Whale pass especially if their draft is more than 5 feet. The trick to the Whale is you need settled weather along with no or small swell. We had settled weather but a 4-6 foot swell was runniing and we've run Don't Rock last year, before hurrican Sandy. As we departed Hope Town our boat speed was 5.4 knots at 2200 rpm's of engine....hummm, I knew we probably had a "reef" growing under our boat so we dropped anchor off the Fish Cay's and dove in to clean the bottom. Two hours later we removed enough growth to feed most of the fish in the area. Firing up the engines and sure enough at 2200 rpm's we were doing 7.2 knots!
The next day we slowly motored thru Don't Rock with plenty of water under our keel's ariving at Green Turtle a few hours later.
We spent a few days at Green Turtle, meeting up with Cookie Monster, Cool Cat and 2 of a Kind.
On the morning of the 9th departed for Florida. The day went fine motoring across the banks, that night crossing the Gulf Stream was "exciting", a large water spout spun close by for 1/2 an hour and there were constant lightning storms nearby to our south, we tried not to look that way! We arrived at Ft. Pierce on the 10th at 9am, 27 hours and 189 nm we were back in the USA! The photo is when we were on Johnny Depp's island along with Virage.

We've been on the move along with Virage. We departed George Town and made are way north thru the Exmas then crossed over to Rock Sound, Eleuthera on Sat. March 23, great day sailing beam reach 15- 20 knots with us catching a nice Mahi while cruising along at 7-8 knots. We spent most of the week in Rock Sound where Frank and his son from Virage and I caught enough Stone Crab to feed a small army. We still have several contaniners in our freezer.
We departed Rock Sound and sailed north. stopping at Rainbow Cay and Royal Island. On April 1st we departed from Royal Island and sailed 50 miles north arriving in the Abacos that afternoon with fresh Mahi Mahi for dinner. We are currently in Treasure Cay as its a good place to ride out a front which is headed our way. The picture is our snorkeling spot off Fowl Cay where we spent the afternoon exploring the amazing reefs on the ocean side of the cay.

Fish Tales

My friend Frank on Virage and I usually try to get out spear fishing several times each week. He and this family are from Canada and mainly speak French but their English is good. So when he called on the VHF radio and said he met some other Canadians who for the past 30 years have resided for part of each year here in George Town and were going to show us some "good spots" for fishing I was keen to go. So we loaded up the dinghy's and headed out at 7am the next morning with Steve and Jean Luke. On the way to the reef Frank explained how the friends he met were "hardcore" fishermen.
So we anchor next to a reef in a cut leading out to the ocean and hit the water. Frank scores two lobsters and me one after placing them into our dinghy we spread out and continue fishing. I come around the corner of the reef and run into Steve. He has a nice Margate on the end of his spear. He and I continue fishing when I turn and see a 8-9 foot bullshark following Steve. He turns to what I think is being able to see the shark and then continues fishing! WOW, I say to myself these guy's really are hard core, fishing with a fish on the end of their spear with a monster bull shark swimming nearby!
I bee line it back to the dinghy and after climbing in I see Steve swimming as fast as he can while poking at the shark. Apparently he never saw the shark until it bumped him! Yes these guy's are hardcore but they are also smart we rounded up the other two with the dinghy and headed several miles away to continue our fishing;) The photo is of our "home" the last two weeks.

Cold?

OK, I know I'm not going to get much sympathy from most readers, but it was cold here today, 63 degrees inside the cabin this morning! We've been busy with the cruisers regatta here in George Town. Third place in both the coconut challenge and around the island sailing race, not so well in yesterdays treasure hunt. The picture was taken by a friend as we sailed out of Staniel Cay last month.
