Dodging weather

26 May 2012 | Myrtle Beach SC
Rick
We spent a night in Fernandina Beach FL while watching a tremendous thunderstorm pass by to the north around 11pm. The wind picked up to close to 40knots while a constant stream of lightning lit up the horizon. The storm lasted for over an hour before sliding by out to sea to the east. At 4am we departed along with Zusammen and Dharma pointed our bows out to sea for a passage northward to South Carolina. As we exited the inlet the storms which passed earlier were still lighting up the eastern horizon with lightning. We motorsailed all day under clear skies with wind out of the south around 10-15 knots. That afternoon we had dolphins visit us for over an hour while surfing our bow wave and jumping besides the boat. After an uneventful overnight we arrived at the Georgetown inlet around 9:30 am and six hours later dropped the hook completing the 260 mile trip in a little over 37 hours.
We are currently in Myrtle Beach waiting to see where tropical storm Beryl is headed, hopefully to our south. We'll try to head northward as fast as possible after the storm passes which in a sailboat is relatively slow.
The picture was take yesterday by Hoku.
