Paradise, aka: the Florida Keys

It's been a really long time since I posted a blog. I know, I should be more disciplined! But I have made numerous Facebook entries. That counts, doesn't it? I prefer Facebook when I have a bunch of photos to post. I can only post one on this site. So any readers who are not on my friends list at Facebook, [...]

Boot Key Harbor: A Pleasant Community on the Water

We have enjoyed our stay in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon. There is a nice community of boaters here. It's protected from winds during bad weather and the city makes it a welcoming place.

Welcome to the Keys!

We left Lake Worth at 7:30a thinking we were only going to Fort Lauderdale. The admiral didn't like the waves and seas we had yesterday so she was reluctant to put in a long day again. I can't say I blame her. However, today's conditions were delightful! She put off the task of seeking a marina for the [...]

The Lazy Fisherman

We woke early and got underway from our pleasant Anchorage in Lake Worth around 7:30 to catch slack current in the inlet. It was a bit bumpy with the east winds but not terrible. Once out we set sail and motor sailed under full sail and mild winds for about 3 hours. Our original destination was Fort [...]

Moving south

After pulling ourselves away from Velcro Beach we traveled south along the waterway to Ft. Pierce. We had our friend aboard as extra crew as needed but more as pleasant company. We enjoyed Vero Beach and will likely be back. We had a good time walking to the beach and getting caught by the security guard [...]

Shorts, sandals, and sunny skies

We have been enjoying our stay at "Velcro Beach" and understand why people have named it thus. Life is pleasant here and you have access to the town via the free bus. It's not a fast way to get around but it is convenient!

Beaufort; pretty and fun but time to move on

We spent some fun days in Beaufort! Aside from taking care of some boat chores, we walked across the Lady's Island Bridge to explore the town. They were setting up for their"night on the town" where the main shopping Street was blocked off for traffic for the evening and vendors took to the streets. Carolers, music and food were lined up and down. We explored a bit, checked out the pretty Riverside Park to see the gorgeous sunset and then walked back over to Lady's Island where we had reserved our steak dinner with a huge steak, baked potato, and corn for $12! The steak was well seasoned and cooked perfectly as we are out on their deck overlooking the water.

We loved this Marina. Nothing fancy but everything you need with very friendly people.

The night before, Anne and I went in to town for a romantic dinner for two at the American Bull Tavern. The food was fabulous and well priced. A lovely evening together!

So we departed at slack before ebb tide to take advantage of the strong downriver currents in Beaufort River. We requested a bridge opening and then we were through! The current built to 2.4 knots, pushing us along at 8 knots! All good since there wasn't a breath of wind. We sped past Parris Island with their water tower saying "we make Marines." Our daughter advised us to keep as eye out for swimmers as some recruits will try to swim of the island to get away. Sheesh!

It wasn't far before we were paying the lavish homes of Hilton Head. Very fancy! A lot of current as well, luckily going with us. We proceeded to the Cooper River, to anchor before Ramshorn Creek which needs to be transited at least at 1/2 tide. Since we arrived at dead low tide, that wasn't going to happen. We will leave first thing tomorrow morning for Thunderbolt, GA. Our Anchorage is very pretty, lots of Marsh grasses, and unfortunately, lots of bugs.
