Paradise, aka: the Florida Keys

It's been a really long time since I posted a blog. I know, I should be more disciplined! But I have made numerous Facebook entries. That counts, doesn't it? I prefer Facebook when I have a bunch of photos to post. I can only post one on this site. So any readers who are not on my friends list at Facebook, [...]

Boot Key Harbor: A Pleasant Community on the Water

We have enjoyed our stay in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon. There is a nice community of boaters here. It's protected from winds during bad weather and the city makes it a welcoming place.

Welcome to the Keys!

We left Lake Worth at 7:30a thinking we were only going to Fort Lauderdale. The admiral didn't like the waves and seas we had yesterday so she was reluctant to put in a long day again. I can't say I blame her. However, today's conditions were delightful! She put off the task of seeking a marina for the [...]

The Lazy Fisherman

We woke early and got underway from our pleasant Anchorage in Lake Worth around 7:30 to catch slack current in the inlet. It was a bit bumpy with the east winds but not terrible. Once out we set sail and motor sailed under full sail and mild winds for about 3 hours. Our original destination was Fort [...]

Moving south

After pulling ourselves away from Velcro Beach we traveled south along the waterway to Ft. Pierce. We had our friend aboard as extra crew as needed but more as pleasant company. We enjoyed Vero Beach and will likely be back. We had a good time walking to the beach and getting caught by the security guard [...]

Shorts, sandals, and sunny skies

We have been enjoying our stay at "Velcro Beach" and understand why people have named it thus. Life is pleasant here and you have access to the town via the free bus. It's not a fast way to get around but it is convenient!

Georgia's on my mind (and under my keel)

03 December 2017 | Vernon River, south of Savannah
Tod / now sunny and warm
We had a fast run down the Beaufort River. Current pushed us along at 8 knots! No wind so we couldn't sail which was a bummer! The past week or so the normally active north wind has quieted down. It's also been warmer which has been nice. It's great to be back in shorts and T-shirts! But I digress.

We sped past Parris Island, taking our daughters advise to watch out for swimmers trying to escape the Marines. Then followed the AICW south past Hilton and anchored just off Ramshorn Creek, which is known for shoaling. It wouldn't work arriving at low tide!

We had a nice salmon cooked on the grill and then watched Hot Pursuit for our evenings entertainment before hitting the rack.

Today, we awoke at high tide with a coastal flood advisory out from NOAA. It was also cloudy and chilly! The marsh grasses were all flooded, making it look very much like rice paddies. It wasn't an issue to traverse the 3 shallow cuts but the extra high water made it difficult to see the edges!

When we crossed the Savannah River we crossed in to Georgia. Some of you are friends with the Conners. They named the only bascule bridge in Georgia TDB as it would not open for them on Thanksgiving. They opened for us, but then Thanksgiving has passed.

We passed Isle of Hope, GA which is a very pretty historic town filled with antebellum houses and pretty tree lined streets, several of which can be seen from the skinny waterway. We hope to stop there on the way back! A neat little town that needs exploring!

We dropped our hook on the Vernon River, near Montgomery, Ga. We need to time our passage through Hell Gate for high tide which will be at 8am tomorrow. This is another time we arrived at a shallow passage at low tide! That's ok, gives us a chance to explore a new area and see the pretty little town from this enchanting waterway. Besides, we are not in any rush.

We dinghied around a bit and are now chillaxing in the now Sunny afternoon. Oh yes, there's some wine being consumed.
