The answer to the final quiz is the exclusive resort beaches of Careyes. Rick's answer was a good try, but he forgot to backtrack 69 nautical miles from Las Hadas.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Geo-quiz. It has gone to join Davy Jones and his locker. All good fun while it lasted but onwards and upwards.

I am the Volcano Cosigüina and my resting place is the Gulf of Fonseca, Central America.
At more than 3000 meters high this was once the tallest volcano in Central America until January 20th, 1835 when the most violent eruption since colonization blew more than half the height off Cosigüina. It paved the ocean with pumice, and plunged three countries into darkness for many days, with ash falling from Mexico to Colombia. Several large pieces of the volcano flew miles into the Gulf forming the tooth like Fallarones Islands. The liberal Honduran, General Francisco Morazon was leading the newly formed Central American Congress at the time.
Keep trying everyone, July's quiz will be posted soon.

Wow that must have been an enormous explosion. Nature can really turn it on when it wants to. I'm going to check into this region now and learn all I can from this episode. Thanks for the heads up. Oh and yes the Father's Day race was a lot of fun. We did miss you.

Ah Ha. I suppose I'll have to start thinking in metaphor in order to better attempt future geo-quizes. Well done Mama: beautifully written riddle. Say that three times fast.

Eric, thanks for the try but no.
Not much other response so here´s a clue.

The General was Francisco Morazon

In the year the great General returned to power I lost my cool and was brought down a peg or three. In the dark days and weeks ahead the strife left me a shadow of my former self. Instead of standing proudly among my brothers and sisters I lay exhausted, my heart broken.
What is my name and where is my resting place?

Hi from Mazatlan--

I'm guessing your narrator was Oscar Romero, archbishop of San Salvador, who was murdered by death squads in 1980 and awaits canonization. He is buried in the Metropolitan Cathedral in San Salvador.

But "the great General" is a mystery...Jimmy Carter ha ha?

CONGRATULATIONS Kate Cross de Korte. The answer is Maximon or San Simon and he resides in a town called Zunil in central Guatemala. Kate's prize is in the mail!
Every year on November the 1st Maximon is moved into a new house where he is looked after by several attendants. Visitors to the shrine take cigars and Quezalteca; a strong local hooch. The effigy always has a smoking cigar or cigarette in his mouth and candles and offerings burn in the room where he resides. It is advised to ask discreetly for La Casa de Maximon because the town's people are protective of their anti-saint and the utmost respect must be shown if you visit the shrine yourself.
In life, some say that he was a Franciscan friar who chased after young indigenous girls therefore his effigy has no legs. He represents the vices of the world and many supplicants ask his help to rid them of these in their own lives.
At Easter he plays a major role in Santiago Atitlan nearby Zunil. On Monday of Holy week his effigy is taken to the lake shore where it is washed. On Tuesday he is dressed in a new felt hat and western style clothes. On Wednesday he is taken to a chapel where he waits until Good Friday for a symbolic confrontation with a Christ effigy in the main plaza. Quite a guy is Maximon. Thanks to everyone who had a try at this one. Keep a lookout for June's Geo-Quiz sometime after the 1st.

Hi Virginia and Richard! Eric and I have just returned from a two-week trip to Guatemala. We stayed mostly in Antigua (and dutifully studied Spanish), but we made a trip to Lake Atitlan, where we too met Maximon in one of the adjacent small towns. He is not a figure to forget.

He nearly always has a cigar in his mouth. He wears a black brimmed hat but never indigenous clothes. He is not a favorite of the Catholic Church. He never refuses a tot of hard liquor with his friends. He once took advantage of young, unsuspecting girls. He goes by two different names, but if you are discreet you can find out his current abode.
Who is he and in which town and country can you find him?

Sandino in Nicaragua - but did he have two names?

I think its Maximon who hangs out in Santiago Atitlan in Guatamala...only, if it is, I don't quite get why I needed discretion to find this out?
