POINTS WEST AND THOSE FISHING NETS

01 August 2011 | West Side of the Torres Strait
david
Have just left the west side of the Torres Strait and now hold Booby Island on our port side. Booby is sort of last outpost of the Torres Strait and from here there is open ocean. I am now in the Arafura sea in very nice conditions, consistent trade winds from the ESE and the surface, while a little bumpy, is quiet and behaving. Im proceeding with reefed jib and will keep that up for the night. My path parallels me 5-10 miles north of the main shipping channel. There are rumors that floating fishing nets can be encountered and so my theory is that there would be a certain stupidity to put them in shipping lanes and have them ground up by the big ships...thats the theory anyway. But consequently, I will be traveling slowly tonight just in case and, as I said, under the protection of the 'big boys'.
