SEA SICKNESS, AGULHAS, AND PORT ELIZABETH
09 January 2012 | Port Elizabeth, South Africa

As of 3:30 this afternoon Shearwater is safely tied up at the rickety docks of Port Elizabeth. Katherine and Shannon are no longer aboard, having lasted barely 2 stops down the coast from Richards Bay. Seasickness and discomfort led to their exiting the boat after 350 miles. I will round the Cape of Good Hope alone.
After a thrilling southerly ride last night in the Agulhas Current, reaching speeds of 12-13 knots, we exited that mighty river into the safe environs of Port Elizabeth. Here,we will wait out two cycles. First, the next bad weather coming in from the southern ocean. And second, upon the the advent of good weather, Shearwater and me will exit this port and head west, pushed by easterly winds around the southern tip of South Africa, finally leaving the Indian Ocean and entering, once again, the Atlantic Ocean.
But for now, some sleep, some filming of this colorful fishing harbor and some final boat preparations for the 'rounding'.
