DAY 28 TO FLORIDA!

05 May 2012 | On the way to the Caribbean
david
I am now less than 400 miles from Antigua in the Leeward Islands, Caribbean. Upon reaching the Antigua waypoint, I will make the very final decision whether to proceed or to stop. But, as of this moment, my plan is not to stop in the Caribbean but head straight for Florida.

I have enough diesel on board, about 90 gallons. That would allow me to motor between 500 and 600 miles. As I will take a straight line that hugs the eastern side of the Caribbean Islands then the Turks and Caicos and finally the Bahamas, I will be in reach of diesel should something go wrong.

As for food, I am now subsisting on my last non-canned items. A quick inventory this morning showed that I can last well even though the culinary delights will soon take a precipitous dive.

Shearwater and her systems are all working although the main sail is now very weakened and has to be used judiciously if at all.

With approximately 1700 miles to go, my very approximate ETA at this point, at 100 miles a day, would be May 20,21,22 23. The last week I averaged 140 miles a day but....as I speak already something is developing I didnt expect...those dastardly NW winds on the nose - that should shoot that nice averaging down a bit.

Now, let the spirits that swim out here...lend a hand!
