Cure for Rainy Blues
November 4, 2010, 2:43 pm

Today was a rainy, cloudy day. Plunged me into a deep longing for lilacs and daffodils, so yes, my sense of the appropriate season is still incredibly whacked. After brooding around, staring out of windows at the incessant downpour, I decided something had to be done.

So I adopted a soldier.

And the sun broke through the clouds.
Tuesday, except it is actually Wednesday
November 3, 2010, 3:00 pm

All day I've thought it was Tuesday. I've been writing and writing, really working through some ideas and now all I want to say is what a terrific evening we had last night. It was College Night at KWHS and we got to tour around an entire cafeteria full of college hawkers offering pens and other swag imprinted with mascots and such begging students to please, please come and spend tens of thousands of dollars a year at our institution of higher learning.

Anyway, the same Air Force Academy rep was there as last year and Marianna chatted away with him a good long while about her trip to Colorado Springs this past summer, then we toured a few artsy colleges, a couple Catholic ones and then spent time talking to Air Force retirees from a welding school about how they have zero regrets about their military service. And then they loaded her down with welding pens, magnets and carabiners.

Lots else happened yesterday that I cannot wait to share, but wouldn't you know the camera is not cooperating with the laptop again? So here is a Marianna photo from the aforementioned trip this past summer and then I'm off to pick her up from parade practice for the Veterans' Day parade.

Have a terrific Tuesday, or Wednesday if you insist. :)

My Datebook, November 1
November 1, 2010, 12:46 pm

Stop by Peggy's for more entries.

Outside my Window...
It's not so much what is outside this window but rather the fact that it is opened!

Open windows!!!

I am thinking...
It has been over a year since my last Datebook entry. Wow! Has time flown!!!

I am wearing ...
Blue and white polka dotted shift, red bobby pin in my hair.

I am thankful for...
The willingness of a teen to roll out of bed early to make it to Mass for All Saints Day before school. We stopped at our favorite bakery afterward where the baguettes were just being taken from the oven, delish!

From the kitchen...
Tonight we'll have cider marinated pork chops with baked autumn veggies.

Towards a Real Education...
I learned to knit on circular needles this week - so fun! Now I can't put them down.

I am creating...
Just completed my first ever baby hat on those new needles - super sweet, for some boating friends' baby due on Marianna's birthday!

I am reading...
Knitting patterns. :)

Around the home...
Candles in windows, on tables, in pumpkins. All smelling delightfully Fallish.

One of my favorite things...
Chili simmering all day making the house smell so yummy!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...
Meeting tonight at the marina, Mass tomorrow morning for All Souls, College Night at the high School, voting, Navy League meeting Wednesday, Friday is the World Youth Day Group meeting up in Big Pine, ugh I hate that drive and the fundraisers too.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you:

My Passionflower Vine now has Gulf Fritillary caterpillars!

This Moment

{this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!

April's Shower of Photos
In Which I Reveal That I Am Now The Sort Of Person Who Dresses Their Dog In A Costume
October 21, 2010, 8:49 am

I'm afraid it is so.

But when you have such cute material to work with, how can you resist?

Besides, now that I'm unemployed I need to make money somehow, right? Mia netted us 3rd place with those so, so sad puppy dog eyes. But don't think I'm so cold and unfeeling that I took ALL the winnings for myself, oh no! It was a 50/50 break, I'll take the gift cards and Mia gets the organic ocean-flavored kibble and everyone ends up happy, happy, happy!
Waterspout at Sunset
October 7, 2010, 12:12 pm

I didn't realize how much I've been slumping around staring at the ground till that crushing weight was gone. I let the wind tousle my hair at sunset last night and looked up for what seemed like the first time in months - just in time to see a waterspout!

Nature Study
I Quit.
October 6, 2010, 4:46 pm

You cannot wipe the smile off my face today! I keep wandering around my lovely, lovely home grinning (and cleaning - ahem - it's gotten a tad messy around here!).

I find I always look back to this blog to find all sorts of info and I don't want to forget why exactly I quit my job at the Child Development Center so I'm writing my official 5 reasons why I quit here. There were many, many more reasons (like the safety of the children) but these made the final cut.

1. Pay
I was promised a raise from my previous MWR job to come to the CDC. The day I signed the final paperwork that rate had dropped below my previous hourly pay with the promise that if I completed 13 Modules (equivalent to 15 college credits) it would be reinstated at the proposed level. I completed the Modules within two months and am still awaiting the adjusted pay increase five months later. I was recently told they thought it would take me 2 years to complete the Modules.

2. Education
A ten day notification was given to register for online college classes by August 1, 2010. These classes would be funded out of my pocket to be reimbursed at a later date if funds are still available. I have already met all education requirements that were placed upon me at the time of hire in a timely manner.

3. Negative Work Environment
Never have I been subjected to such a negative work environment. When a simple reminder to perform a task from recent training would have sufficed, i.e. "Lift with the knees, not the back." employees are rather treated to a threatening "If we see you lifting improperly, you will be written up." This has occurred for back safety, diaper changes, and hand washing, among others. At the September training meeting the new policy on Facebook was presented. All evidence of indecent behavior and posts that occur during work hours will be printed and kept on file.

4. Loss of License and Accreditation
This facility has lost it's Accreditation and it's License since I hired on. It is currently open under a Letter of Waiver that will expire November 1. It will take much time and effort to regain these significant losses.

5. Hurricane Policy
At the time of hire, the CDC's Hurricane Policy was that other family member's evacuation orders took precedence over a CDC member's orders. Recently this has changed to a separate, required order to set up and work at a CDC near Orlando if NASKW is impacted by a storm.

I am so, so very happy!

Spam Musubi
August 28, 2010, 8:57 am

Hurray for Saturday!!!

I think I might make some Spam Musubi to celebrate. Any great recipes, hints or tips for me?

I'm all at Sea with this Recipe!
Crabby
August 25, 2010, 3:16 am

We've been invaded by huge land crabs. 4 were on the patio when I got home the other night.

Things that make me crabby:
1. The fact that the director at the school has determined that child gates are dangerous to children and removed them all and pitched them gleefully into the dumpster leaving the bathrooms open for 10 little one year olds to splash in the potty.

2. I lodged a formal complaint after one baby tipped over in the toilet and couldn't get back out. Pulling her sopping wet head out of the toilet bowl was not a highlight of my day.

3. The director then informed us that the one year olds are now considered old enough to be potty trained. What planet is she from? We have several 13 month olds who can't even walk yet!

4. Even if we did try to potty train one of the 22-24 month olds, do we have to do it with a crowd of 9 others wedged around flushing the toilet repeatedly?

Things that improve my mood immensely:
1. The Safety Officer responds within 24 hours.

Chatty Things
August 14, 2010, 10:45 am

Since it's been such a long, long time since I've chatted it up here, I thought maybe I should run a random update post.

1. I switched jobs. From part time at the bar to full time at the Child Development Center on base. I could work with kids aged anywhere from infant to 18 but am currently placed with 10 little one year olds.

2. Most of spring was spent in doctor's offices as first Hal was prepped for back surgery, then denied, then prepped, then cured minus surgery. Then Marianna was rushed in for surgery unexpectedly. She's still trying to heal up from that jazzy fun time.

3. Brick and mortar school looms on the horizon for year 2. So odd to experience August minus planning plus clothes shopping.

There. Three is enough for now. My favorite beach and boat are calling this fine Saturday morning!
