FOR TODAY: May 12...
Outside My Window...
Low, racing clouds are tangling in the masts of the sailboats
I am thinking...
Summery, sandy thoughts
I am thankful for...
This poem given to me by Marianna for Mother's Day:
Daintily you sip
Topaz, Ruby, Onyx gleams
There you are, then gone.
From the kitchen...
Asparagus, roast beef and bleu cheese wraps
I am wearing...
A brilliant cotton sundress in retro greens and turquoise
I am creating...
A new summer notebook for grocery lists and notes
I am going...
To consider what it will take to complete a writing project I've been dabbling with this spring
I am reading...
I just began At Risk by Alice Hoffman this morning in the cockpit with coffee, a rosy sunrise and a blackbird chorus
I am hoping...
this blustery weather settles by Thursday
I am hearing...
Rigging clanking on masts, waves slapping the hull, the dinghy bumping the boat
Around my home...
Buena Vista Social Club is blasting (the first song is perfection, isn't it?), Marianna is crafting a mask and I'm debating on Italian Roast coffee or Lavender Green Tea this afternoon.
One of my favorite things...
Sand between my toes while watching herons fly home in the evening
A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week:
Organization!!! The holds they are a-bursting!!!
Here is a picture thought I am sharing...
Thank you, Peggy, for the thought-provoking Daybook.
Your Life is 80% Green
You live a very green life, and you're aware of how your actions help the earth.
Of course, it's hard to be totally green. But when you make a tradeoff, you know why you're making it.
How Green Is Your Life?
Happy Earth Day! What are your plans for today?
We just might wander over to the flats at high tide today. The Spring Tides (as in spring up outta your chair, not the season) are in and I'm thinking our little hardshell dinghy just might be able to make it over there easily today.

I feel like a brain dump today. I have a million posts swirling in my brain and the wind is gusting to 20-30 knots (I'm guessing) high enough to heel the boat over and keep it there for 5 seconds or so.
1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE ?
My middle name is a multi-generational name.
2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
Months ago, I think.
3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?
When I take my time.
4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
Refried Beans, I'm afraid I'm entering a meat is gross phase!
5. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
6. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU?
7. DO YOU USE SARCASM A LOT?
I'm afraid I just might.
8. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?
Nope. My sis and I had them yanked at the same time.
9. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP?
Are you nuts???
10. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL?
11. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF?
No. Flip-Flops have no laces. No backs either - Ouch! I thought I could wear cute flats to work the other day and my poor, poor heels that hadn't seen a real shoe in 5 years are still protesting!
12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG?
Physically strong? Emotionally strong? Mentally strong? Am I overthinking this question?
13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM? Cookies and Cream, tastes like California.
14. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
Usually I read their shirts. Aren't all these walking billboards amazing?
15. RED OR PINK?
16. WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF?
My newly painted lavender toes, definitely more of a red polish sort of girl - as my husband immediately said when he spied them!
17. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST?
My family sprinkled far and wide, when will you all come see me???
18. WHAT COLOR PANTS AND SHOES ARE YOU WEARING?
Denim with sky-blue patches and the aforementioned lavender toes.
19. WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU ATE?
An apple and provolone cheese.
20. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
Fairy Music from Past Times.
21. IF YOU WERE A CRAYON, WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE?
22. FAVORITE SMELLS?
Vanilla and Coconut and Salty Sea Air.
23. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE?
24. FAVORITE SPORTS TO WATCH?
Hockey. I'm learning to watch football this year. It is best in the snow, I think.
25. HAIR COLOR?
26. EYE COLOR?
My driver's license says green.
Marianna says they are greyish teal with orangish-yellow near the pupil. So there.

The slap of the water on the hull.
39. ROLLING STONES OR BEATLES?
40. WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME?
41. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT?
The ability to pull together a meal from nothing. This continually amazes my sister and, I think, stresses her out. She likes a hunk o'meat and a predictable pile of veggies with a starch neatly beside it on the plate. I tend not to cook this way, isn't that right, Veronica? LOL!
42. WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
St. Luke's in Denver.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for A Little of This, A Little of That!
Just what I needed today...
Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Wrapping presents is one of my favorite things to do! I remember getting really elaborate with the ribbon in my early teen years, they were works of art, let me tell you! Gift bags are awful for presents but super cool for storing things like stationary and cards or as part of the decorations with heaps of pretty ornaments inside.
Real tree or artificial?
We've had both, I fondly recall trying to assemble those old artificial trees with the color coded wire, best thing I ever did was recolor that wire with vibrant nail polish one year! As far as real trees go the first one I recall was cut down deep in the forests of the CO Rocky Mountains and carried home, we've hauled cedar trees home behind our horses and then put a "real" tree inside, cedars are only good for bonfires!
When do you put up the tree?
I try to have the tree up by Saint Nicholas' Day.
When do you take the tree down?
Sometime during that week after New Years.
Favorite holiday theme?
Favorite gift received as a child?
Herbal books and handcrafts.
Do you have a nativity scene?
Yes! I had the hardest time finding one here in the Keys, I had half a marina out looking for us one year! Jack and Lorraine found a beautiful snowglobe Nativity that we love but no one could find a traditional multi-pieced set. How awful is that? Then the good ol' Dollar General stepped up to the plate and had a pile of really nice Nativities. I bought one on the spot!
Hardest person to buy for?
My dearest husband, of course!
Easiest person to buy for?
Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
Oh, it had to be Grandma's traditional underware, always really nice panties, and I actually liked one set with delicate embroidered doves but having to unwrap underclothes in front of all Dad's brothers was mortifying!
Mail or email cards?
Snail Mail all the way! I think giving and receiving cards and letters and finding them in the mailbox is one of the best parts of this Season!
Favorite Christmas movie?
White Christmas, or maybe It's a Wonderful Life, or Little Women...
When do you start shopping for Christmas?
December 1st. Don't rush me!
Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
No, but there is this one tiny, tiny gift bag, that has been passed around this family for years!
Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
Russian Tea Cakes!
White lights or colored on the tree?
Colored lights on the inside tree, up on deck we have varied colored and white over the years. I don't know which we'll do yet this year!
Favorite Christmas song?
OK, how can I name just one?
Still, Still, Still - my December baby's lullaby
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
The Carol of the Bells
O Holy Night
Travel for Christmas or stay at home?
For the past few years we've stayed on the boat.
Can you name all of Santa's reindeers?
Angel on the tree top or a star?
I like stars on the top of trees but Marianna found and fell in love with an angel one year so she flies over our inside tree.
Open the presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
One present on Christmas Eve, it used to be from Mom's parents when I was a kid and it was usually a nice warm nightgown.
Most annoying thing about this time of year?
People who moan and groan their way through December especially if I'm trapped beside them in the post office.
What I love most about Christmas?
Christmas lights and candles, the music, Jesse Trees, Advent Wreaths, Saint Nicholas - patron of sailors and Saint Lucy - my name saint and wrapping presents and decorating the tree and the reflection of our lights in the ocean...
A picture of our Jesse Tree so far this year, Marianna has been making one ornament a day on some sparkly silver and purple gift tags from Martha Stewart, of course you can't actually see the sparkly silver and purple in this shot but I love her depictions of Creation with the sun, moon and twelve foil stars, the Tree of Knowledge with the tempting fruit, and the Fall of Man with an amazing snake bearing the shining fruit in its mouth.
In other news...I've been nominated for the 2007 Homeschool Blog Awards! I'm deeply honored to be nominated two years in a row, in the category of Best Geographical Blog.
Thank you so very much for brightening my day!
Can you believe it is Thanksgiving Week already? I'm in shock.
Kids are off school down here, our local Jr. ROTC high school girl stopped by the boat today trying to drum up money for a future trip to D.C. to visit the Ro-toon-da. I asked her if she knew what that was and she said no but could I hire her anyhow? She'd wrap presents for $14.46 an hour.
So there is the first thing I'm thankful for this week, no fundraisers to visit places I can't pronounce!
I thought the above might sound a little snippy, rather than a little funny as I hoped so I ventured off into the depths of the Internet to find something else...something uplifting, you know. Blogthings came through once again with eeirily accurate results for this Irishwoman today.
You Are The Cranberry Sauce
A little sweet, a little sour - you've got the flava!
What Part of Thanksgiving Are You?
So there you have it. A little sweet, a little sour (!) but never bland!
A meme for a rainy day. We are under a flood watch with more rain coming up from Cuba. This grand meme is from the ever creative Dawn at By Sun and Candlelight. Marianna's answers are in italics, mine are not.
When does fall begin for you?
Autumn begins around October 1 for me, the nights are cooler, the storms that blow across the islands are spectacular. I have the urgings to light candles again as the sky darkens and the lightning flashes.
Autumn begins when the days get cooler and more wind and storms come through.
What is your favorite aspect of fall?
I love so many things about my favorite season: the changing leaves, the crisp air, the shorter days. And I really love the return to routine after the summer.
Down here we don't get the changing of leaves, which is really sad, so I like all of the family time and baking when we find an oven. The smells of Autumn too are a favorite part of mine too.
What is your favorite fall memory?
Clambering on the rocks at Castle Crags in Colorado, a perfect Fall day under that blue Colorado sky.
Baking with family or just hanging around talking about last year and the year before that and such things. Especially when they are tales of your parents and grandparents.
What do you like to drink in the fall?
Apple Cider is the perfect Autumn drink, hot or cold. I have relatives who'd throw a cider making party every October and nothing tastes so good as a cup of the freshest of ciders you just helped press.
Hot Apple Cider! Mmmmm. Delicious!
What's your favorite fall food?
Chili and candy corn!
Thanksgiving - all traditional.
What is fall weather like where you live?
Hot and humid, lots of rain with the occasional cool breeze after a downpour.
The lowest temperature we have ever gotten down here in the Keys that I remember was around the lower fifties, upper forties and that was in December I think.
What color is fall?
Earth tones with highlights of vibrant oranges and reds.
Greens, blues, and yellows. ( Plants, ocean, and sand!)
What does fall smell like?
Spices, crisp apples, woodsmoke when we cross bridges.
Cinnamon, baking, and the occasional chiminea burning merrily!
Holiday shopping in fall: yes or no?
No! I'm a wait for the very last moment shopper as the recipients of my presents can attest! I really should change that but I'm afraid that my entire family would have a simultaneous heart attack if packages arrived right after Thanksgiving.
Depends. We do our shopping in bits and pieces.
If you could go anywhere in the fall, where would you go?
Colorado, the plains for cottonwood leaf piles to jump in and then a drive through the mountains culminating in a picnic on Rabbit Ears.
Kansas City to see Michelle again.
What is your favorite fall sport?
Sports? I am so un-sporty. Do they have competitive level yoga under a blazing maple tree?
Horseback riding, and hiking.
Do you have a favorite fall chore?
We don't really have a chore that we only do in Fall.
What she said.
What is your least favorite thing about fall?
I miss the warm feeling of flannel shirts under the sun.
I don't have one.
What is your favorite fall holiday? Thanksgiving Day, such a wonderful day for family, food and fun!
All Hallows Eve. The day before All Saints Day.
What's your favorite kind of pie?
Mmmm...apple pies of all kinds! Deep dish, thin galettes, apple pies with raisins or cranberries. Yum!
Apple, Pumpkin, and rhubarb!
What was your favorite Halloween costume?
A slithery green mermaid with ropes of pearls caught by my hard hat diver of a husband.
Of all that I've been my favorite would have to be when I was a Black Puma.
What was your favorite Halloween candy?
Since I consider chocolate a primary food group, I'd have to go with candy corn!
Dark Chocolate! Preferably Dove.
What was your least favorite Halloween candy?
Bit O'Honeys always enticed me in as a kid - oooh! Honey candy! Immediately I'd find my jaws sealed together, utterly gross.
Everything but dark chocolate. Ick on it all!
Which do you prefer, the Farm or the Fair? Fairs seem like a summer thing to me being from the West, so I guess I'd have to go with the Farm though I'd much prefer an option like the Woods as my favorite Farm memories are away from the icky barnyard and out in the Woods.
Do you have a favorite fall book?
Blossom Culp books by Richard Peck are a must read right before Halloween. One of the first books I recall making me howl out loud with laughter!
Tasha Tudor. She has done some incredible books!
How about a favorite fall poem?
I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell;
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights
around the shore.
(Dante Gabriel Rossetti)
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds, November!
I think that is the funniest thing I've ever read! It makes me laugh everytime.
this morning since I have the chance to post BUT I sent the camera with the card in the waterproof case out in the dinghy so...no pictures available! Darn! The coordination is lacking this morning, I guess. I think it comes from splitting the same amount of coffee between three people when we are used to splitting it in two. It is a theory anyway, a caffeine deprived theory perhaps, but a theory just the same! ;)
Let's see, first off I've contacted Tim at SailBlogs about the difficulty people have been having leaving comments here, his response:
This is not really related to the maintenance we're doing, but rather a spike in traffic that is occurring for a few blogs.
Thank you so much for emailing me and letting me know there was comment trouble happening!
Hopefully Tim will be able to hammer out the slightly smarter system in no time at all! Think hammocks, not blankets!
Dear, nice, Dawn at By Sun and Candlelight awarded the Nice Matters Award to me this week!
A (slightly modified) description of the award:
"This award is for those who are nice people; good friends and those who inspire good feelings and inspiration. Also for those who are a positive influence on our world."
I am going to break with tradition a bit here and award this Nice Matters Award to some real, close to me, people - Hal, Marianna and Veronica! It has been a very nice week so far, we are all still alive, no one has been deep-sixed and very few if any tears have been shed!
They truly deserve this award and if you want to play along grab a tape measure and mark out a 35 ft by 11 ft space that is kinda pointy on one end. Stand in that space with three of your nearest and dearest loved ones and imagine moving all your possessions into the space with you.
Nice really does matter in a situation like this!
Now, just for fun, when I was over at By Sun and Candlelight to grab the Nice Matters button I went ahead and took the Accent Quiz I found over there and the results were scary accurate for this Denver-born and California-raised girl!
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net
Western. Like Midland, Western is another accent that people consider neutral. So, you might not actually be from the Western half of the country, but you definitely sound like it.
I hope your Labor Day Weekend is off to roaring start! Hopefully the camera will return and be filled with exciting photos to share! Stay tuned...
Over our busy, busy summer I've been tagged for I don't know how many memes - and responded to basically zip! So sorry, dear people!
So this morning I thought I'd make all right in the world and do one single mass posting of all my missed out upon memes.
But I didn't.
It was stressing me out. Don't know why, but there you go.
To solve this I went ahead and hit delete on that particular massive post and delved into my potential post pile and pulled up this winner from who knows where and goodness knows when to share with you today in place of all those other cool memes.
