Ancient Adventures

Adventure is indeed on the log!

I intend to sail the 16ft Trust open boat - Shira - this summer, using ancient equipment in a traditional fashion.

I shall, of course, keep all modern safety equipment on board, but shall endeavour to recreate the feel and adventure of sailing in the past.

The passage plan is to sail from Sailor's Creek, Cornwall, thro' Falmouth and on to The Lizard. Then to Mousehole for their Sea Festival. After a short pause there, to perform a ceilidh for the occasion, we shall then set sail for Brittany.

After a few stops around the North coast, we shall make for the festival at Brest, followed by Dournanez the weekend after.

Then a return trip to Falmouth to complete the three week passage.

The traditional equipment I plan to be using to sail is as follows:-

*Hand-held Lodestone Compass - made with a basic compass card and contained in a glass-roofed brass box

*Wooden Log - made from a roll of knotted string and a weighted triangular board

*Thirty second sand timer - for timing the log

*Thirty minute sand timer - for timing the journey

*Traverse Board - for keeping records throughout the 8 Bells

*Quadrant - for correcting the time at midday

*Some old charts - for navigation

In addition to this, I shall be using period clothing, equipment and tools of the period ranging from the 16th Century to present day.

Sponsorship is welcomed, as we would like to take some good Cornish Ale to France, to show them what good drink is!

We are also looking for other adventurous sea-folk to join us in small craft. If ye never thought it possible in ye little vessel, then let's talk and see what A small fleet can do!

Welcome to the blog for The Mayflower Trust.

We hope to regularly pass on what we are up to with sailing our historic 19th century Falmouth Quay Punt 'Shira', building work on our Flagship 'Silver Quest', and other details as our Trust becomes commissioned and develops.

The Mayflower Trust is committed to delivering Britain's maritime heritage to all, by touring the South West coast of England, and beyond, and teaching the public and other visitors about our rich heritage of the sea.

Silver Quest is our 58 foot MFV about to be built into Britain's latest Tall Ship as a 500 year old 'Nao' or 'Carrack'. Ready to tour the world from 2014 onwards.

Shira is our historic 16 foot Falmouth Quay Punt immortalised in 1894 by the famous Cornish artist Henry Scott Tuke in his painting 'The Missionary Boat'. A floating museum of rich Falmouth history, she is available for all competent trust members to sail for free.

Please visit http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Mayflower-Trust/111012338947206?ref=ts and maybe join our Trust.

I am Wayne Booth, the founder and skipper of all Trust vessels and often sail the local waters and deal a bit of pirating antics to some unsuspecting vessels under the name of Capitano Juan Barraca de Los tres jabs is con las lenguas Rojas en al aire.

Happy sailing to ye all!
