Sailfest Zihuatanejo
03 February 2018 | Zihuatanejo Bay
When we arrived in Zihuatanejo Bay there were only a couple of boats anchored. This week there are about 40 boats anchored here to participate in the annual Sailfest.
The festival is a fund raiser to contribute to schools in the countryside on the outskirts of Zihuatanejo.
The sailors offer cruises on their boats where anyone can sign up and pay for a tour. The trips include musical performances, sunset cruises, or transportation to Ixtapa Island.
There are many social events and a highly organized committee who coordinate everything.
We had the pleasure of attending a welcome party at the new home of Tim and Donna from the sailboat "Northwest Passage" and met many other sailors.
Unfortunately we wont be here to partake in the official week of sailfest since we have plans to go to Guadalajara but we have already signed up to take guests out on a sunset cruise when we return.
One of the boats who anchored close to us is named "40 Love".
I've been looking for tennis players to tune me up for tennis tournament I will be playing in in Guadalajara so when I saw this name I immediately hailed it on the VHF.
Joel was happy to oblige so we had some nice hits the next morning on the court.
Joel had just sailed "40 Love" down from Rincón de Guayabitas and told me had two crew from Kelowna who joined him as far as Barra de Navidad. Gillian Thompson and Dick Duggan who we know well from KYC. What a small world.
