Getting from there to here

As much as we would like to take all the credit for our long voyage across the Pacific, we have had a steady and reliable aid guiding us along. That aid is the multitude of instruments we have to tell us things like: where are we? Are we going in the right direction? How fast are we going? Is [...]

Sea Creatures

For the most part, the life in the deep ocean is under the water and not seen, but there have been some remarkable sightings on this trip. Here's a taste of what we have encountered.

SF approach, full moon and meteor

This is an interesting part of the return trip. We had the hard sailing north from Hawaii into the prevailing swell. We had the sinister high pressure that was following us everywhere we went in the middle of the trip. Now, finally we are on track towards SF. It's a good feeling to be making [...]

Heavy Weather Sailing

It's almost a relief hitting the heavy weather portion of our trip. We were worrying about the gale for so long, and the large seas and high winds that it would bring where we were further south, that when it finally hits we know what to expect. As our last correspondence with the weather guys states: "There [...]

Whales and Weather

Saw a pod of killer whales yesterday, passed all around us, and one followed us for a few minutes. This is their place and they are curious about us. I've seen lots of killer whales in the San Juans, but new and exciting to several others.

Weather

Seems like we've been plagued by the adverse weather this trip. On the way to Hawaii we encountered large, confused, seas and then Hurricane Darby. The last leg of the trip to Kanehoe was rushing like madmen to avoid been trapped at sea for days while the storm system passed. (We arrived at 4pm. Boats [...]

Life out on the ocean is turning out to be no piece of cake. This entry will be the one and only bitch session. Keep in mind that this should all be taken with grain of salt (ha ha). Lots of fun, joy and fulfillment, but what's that without some gritty grout to fill in the cracks and give us perspective.

I'll start with why activities for yesterday. Our V Berth had take on a rank smell, All our bags with clothing and the like are stored there along with a couple of sails. I think the smell is from condensation leading to mildew. I emptied the berth of everything, rearranged it and it seems to have improved, if only slightly. The next task was to address a strange leak we have in the aft cabin. A significant amount of some mystery liquid has soaked the cushions i the back of the cabin. This was transferring itself to peoples sleeping bags and feet. It was still dripping, so I taped up a false ceiling to guide the stuff over to the walls instead of dripping from the ceiling. I took out the cushions and washed up and used a roll of paper towels to try and dry it up. Is it toxic? Could it be diesel? No, it doesn't have an oder. Could it be oil? No, it's not that slippery. Could it be compass fluid? Yes, the compass retaining ring has a crack and it could be that. Only problem is the compass doesn't seem to be missing any fluid. Oh well, time will tell. Then it was time for dinner and the dishes, but no, can't just turn on the faucet. First we need salt water. This is a two man operation. One to hold the bucket the other to pump while hanging upside down off the aft steps with our trusty West Marine hand bilge pump. Water in hand the dishes were done in no time. Feeling rather tired, I needed a nap, but no, time for my 3 shift on deck. Although tired, this, however, is a pleasure. (Note. End of bitch session. That's all I got)

Up on deck the sun was going down. Realize I don't mean it was the time the sun sets, it was actually there setting in the West right in front of us. This is significant, not only because it was a fabulous sunset, but also because it was the first one I have seen on the trip. George and I were on deck to capture the moment with pictures and video. We have our fingers crossed that the results will resemble the beauty of the moment. But that's not all folks. Just as the sun went down a big thing rose out of the ocean behind us. It was the brightest full moon I think I've ever seen. It was casting shadows of us on the boat so bright I took the opportunity to do some hand shadows. The rabbit (my favorite) and duck. Yeah!

I was off at 11:00 and back on at 5:00. After all the work, I needed more sleep than that. Mike and I had an adventure jibing that didn't go very well. By the time we got things straightened away, the wind had returned and we stayed on the same course as we started with. Back to bed at 8 and I just woke up at 12. Another great day has begun. Breakfast and lunch in succession and back up on deck at 2:00. NOW (Paulo just poked me!)
