DAY 15 TRANSATLANTIC CANARIES TO CARIBBEAN

18 December 2009 | halfway across
blue skies and wind at last
We were officially halfway finally and we're going to crack a bottle of champagne tonight. Several of the other boats in proximity to us also picked up some wind and Sojourn has made some ground and is not that far away from us now. Maybe we can raft up in the middle of the Atlantic for Christmas! Probably not given the forecast is that the tradewinds will continue to build for the next few days and hopefully we'll have a faster ride from here. We've travelled about 90 nautical miles in the past 24 hours. We heard from the other boats back in Las Palmas who have been waiting to leave and they are now stuck in the Canaries until Boxing Day because of the bizaare weather conditions at the moment. We feel fortunate we got away when we did. We lost the magic lure today. Something big with sharp teeth took it based on the bite marks left in the line around the sinker. Argonaut have landed two huge Mahi Mahi's a metre long each. Tosca on the other hand haven't caught a thing so far. Theychanged their lure yesterday to something that looks squid-like and caught a huge Mahi Mahi. They were so excited and as it got close to the boat it rose up and broke the hook. They were 'gutted' as Ashley put it in her pommy accent. So here's hoping they were luckier today. We saw a third boat in 2 days on the horizon yesterday. Turned out to be another French flagged boat called Alleande. We had a brief chat on the VHF and paced each other throughout the night but this morning we motor-sailed to charge the batteries and left them in the distance.

About:
We left Australia on April 29, 2007 to start our 'cruising the world' adventure with an attitude that life's too short and waiting until retirement might mean the adventure never happens. Sam turned 15 this year and we hope these travels will stay with him for life...in a good way. [...]
Extra:
Also travelling with us is our Shih Tsu Milo, a seasoned boat dog all the way from Australia and an avid fisherman. He's always the most enthusiastic when we land a fish or when the bait net is cast. Actually, he's even enthusiastic when we haven't caught anything. He adores dolphins and runs like [...]
