26 May 2008, At the dock in St George's Harbour
Today's a public holiday in Bermuda and a pretty big one at that. We're heading for Hamilton after Sam finishes his school work to check out the festivities. Among other things, there's a Bermuda Day Parade including the Gombey dancers (pronounced Gum-bay) who's origins date back to the days of slavery. May is recognised as Heritage Month when Bermuda celebrates its past right back to 1609 when the the Sea Venture was shipwrecked on the beach near St George's and a new English colony was established.

Sometimes returning to our roots and the old systems can provide inspiration even today. I'd like to bring the stocks back in to help with the home schooling when things get...well, tough.

Well, evey country seems to have it's special drink and Bermuda is no different. The Rum Swizzle is a must, and they are especially good at The Swizzle Inn. The other Bermudian special is a Dark & Stormy, made with Gosling Dark Rum and Ginger Beer. Recipe for the Swizzle is Gosling Rum with orange juice, pineapple juice and a dash of bitters.
