The Fat Lady Sang

4th position..... That's where we finished race 14, the final race! With the winds getting lighter and lighter, we were quickly losing boat speed, and before I finished my night watch.... Australia had over taken us, and Qingdao was breathing down our neck!

Blog 22 - Almost There!

I know this is my second post for today... But I forgot to mention the advantage we had over Jamaica since this morning! We watched them blow out their spinny right in front of us!! It was spectacular sight! Sad for them.... Helpful to us!

Blog 21 - Pulling Away

After our disastrous start to this race, and fight upwind through the wind farms last evening, we managed to gain some mileage back on our competitors! On my night shift, we flew our heavy weight spinnaker in what even I(known as Spinnaker Woman at home) would call 'testy' conditions!

Blog 20 - Windmills, Clogs, and Race Start

Well here we are in IJumuiden, Holland (about 40 minutes outside Amsterdam). This was a short stopover, and really only scheduled as a muster point for the fleet after Cork, and before we head to the grand finale in Hull. Our race into Ijmuiden was much faster than anticipated. Therefore the crews had [...]

NYC: The Big Apple!

As this was my first time to New York, I quickly learned it was full of surprises! What an exciting city! Fascinating! We were docked in NorthCove Marina, located in the financial district of downtown Manhattan! What a place! Here I was, small town girl in the big city! And of course, I did as any other would.... SHOPPED!

I spent most of my days off just taking in the sites, and enjoying the wonderful weather; spending days exploring the city scapes with fellow crew members, and nights shopping and in Times Square. A few of the crew from Nova Scotia and our Skipper Jan were selected to appear on "Live with Regis and Kelly," and present them with a team Cape Breton Island jacket, and have our photo taken with them! It was fantastic! After the show, we managed to score some tickets to the Yankees vs. Baltimore game at Yankee Stadium. We had a blast! What an experience! Some of the British crew were beside themselves with excitement! Afterwards, we headed back to Times Square for a nice soda, to 'unwind' from our fun-filled day!

Shortly after settling in a little pub, my phone rang; it was my dad! My parents claimed they were at the marina, sitting on the boat, and LOOKING FOR ME!! I thought he was kidding me! I couldn't believe my parents flew to New York to surprise me! I was floored! I quickly told them where I was, they hailed a cab and were there in minutes! It was so exciting: second place in the race, my first time in New York, and my parents there to share it all with me! I could not have asked for more!

I joined them in their hotel, (better than a hostel or the boat!) and continued the rest of my stay in NYC with my parents and crew! We had the prize giving ceremony one night, and we took in La Cage Aux FolliesBroadway show, and even managed to do some more shopping and siteseeing! I was so glad they came! And super surprised they managed to plan and pull it all off without me knowing a thing! Good work!

Thanks Mom & Dad!!!XoXo
