The Fat Lady Sang

4th position..... That's where we finished race 14, the final race! With the winds getting lighter and lighter, we were quickly losing boat speed, and before I finished my night watch.... Australia had over taken us, and Qingdao was breathing down our neck!

Blog 22 - Almost There!

I know this is my second post for today... But I forgot to mention the advantage we had over Jamaica since this morning! We watched them blow out their spinny right in front of us!! It was spectacular sight! Sad for them.... Helpful to us!

Blog 21 - Pulling Away

After our disastrous start to this race, and fight upwind through the wind farms last evening, we managed to gain some mileage back on our competitors! On my night shift, we flew our heavy weight spinnaker in what even I(known as Spinnaker Woman at home) would call 'testy' conditions!

Blog 20 - Windmills, Clogs, and Race Start

Well here we are in IJumuiden, Holland (about 40 minutes outside Amsterdam). This was a short stopover, and really only scheduled as a muster point for the fleet after Cork, and before we head to the grand finale in Hull. Our race into Ijmuiden was much faster than anticipated. Therefore the crews had [...]

Living in a Crooked World

Life on board the last few days is a little awkward, to say the least! At the best of times we are only heeled over 35-45 degrees. Everything is slanted and on an angle. Fortunately my bunk is on the low side, so I can sleep with my bunk on an angle and my body wedged between that and the wall! Which is not exceptionally comfortable, being as the wall is covered with condensation, and I have to keep checking that my bivvy bag(waterproof sac to keep sleeping bag dry) is still protecting my sleeping bag. And if I happen to squirm while sleeping, and my arm or face gets close to that wall... bRRrR!!! Last night I had a full night sleep because I was on mother watch again. Shannon was my partner, which made things much more enjoyable! After dinner last night, we were cleaning up, and the boat took a huge dive off a wave, all the dirty dishes, water, AND the container of milk landed on ME! I was soaked from head to toe in grossness! But it did make for a good laugh! Haha! And I was excused to get cleaned up!

I woke up a few times throughout the night to major rolls and rocks of the boat, a few made me nervous, but I was quickly back to sleep. Getting up this morning to begin breakfast, I jumped out of bed, and could only find one boot! I immediately thought there had been a sail change and my boot may have gone out through the hatch and be gone forever, but I asked and nothing was any different from the night before. Struggling to move sails alone, I gave up, threw on flip flops to make breakfast, figuring I'd worry about it later! I mentioned to my bunk neighbors, and Dave went on a hunt for my missing boot! And luckily he found it.... Only it was a question of whether I wanted it anymore... it was in the bilge! (Bilge is dirty sea water that seeps in and splashes around under the floor boards of the boat.) In one of our major gusts over night, it must have slipped off the sail bag and SPLASH! Gross! Dripping wet, and who knows how long it had been there, my poor boot needed major attention! I wiped it down as best I could, and placed it in the generator compartment (where we are not allowed to put things, but I had no choice! I can't sail 4 more days across the Atlantic in flip flops!) So we'll see how dry it is shortly!

The sea state has calmed down a fair bit in the last 8 hours or so,winds have lightened, and the weather forecast has changed completely. We are slightly north of the rhum line to Fastnet Rock, (located on the south western coast of Ireland) about 590 nm away. Hoping that this new weather will come around and benefit us more in the next few days, to allow us to get back in the running of a podium finish!
