Blog 8 - I can smell the Cape

Today as I woke for my 9am shift, we stand in 6th position in the fleet. A little disappointed, but I knew we had our work cut out for us. We have been in worse positions and have climbed back to the top, we just needed to giv'er! There was only 4.5 nm separating us from the leader, Spirit of Australia (grrr!) Watch after watch continue to chip away at our competition. We can visualize the sight of Cape Breton Island, it has 'home sweet home' ora to it, and this drives us to push our sails, every angle and idea we have!
It's been a long hot day, dealing with shifty winds and many sail changes. (because we have no medium weight spinnaker, we still have to continuously change from our light weight to our heavy weight, depending on the strength of the wind) so as the winds lighten we hoist the lightweight, if we cannot hold that, the apparent winds increase above 12-14 knots, we must switch back to the heavy weight. Unfortunately, it is made from thicker material and is smaller in size, so when the winds lighten yet again, we must change sails! It is hard work and tiresome, especially when we can see our competitors maintain their boat speed and course with their medium spinny flying!
Passed Nantucket Shoals waypoint as well as the waypoint set off Georges Bank, now headed North East towards Nova Scotia shoreline. We are not in the position we would like, but slowly closing in on the leader. We have taken 2 nm out of Team Finland who had managed to slip ahead of us and we continue to fight for the front.
Overnight, we battled with Team Finland, and just moments before climbing into my bunk the white stern light we were forever chasing, changed to red! We knew at this point, we had gained enough ground on them, that we were now viewing their port light! We were beside them and continuing to hold a faster boat speed! We cheered momentarily as we were all anxious to hand the reins over to the other watch and get into our warm bunks!
Thankss!! Should be in the cape in less than 2 days! Thursday miday-ish!talk soon!Xo
