Dinghy Engine Repair 101
08 November 2010 | Punta Bonanza ,Espiritu Santos
Hola Amigos,
Cavemen learned along time ago that you need air, fuel and a spark to make fire. We learned yesterday that those are exactly the same ingredients required to make a dingy engine fire up.
While making sure that gas was getting into all of the lines going to the carburetor, we deduced that one should not smoke while checking that because we got a fair amount of gas in the dingy.
We knew we had air so the next thing to look for was a spark. Lewis had a handy-dandy spark detector but did not know how to use it. He went on line but the only thing he could find was," How to spark up your relationships."
He was holding the spark plug wire and yanked on the cord. He then had to immediately drop the wire because he got shocked.
So we had spark and air but no fire. We deduced that there was something wrong with the carburetor. Mary Lee and Lewis decided to paddle over to shore and have lunch at the exclusive resort Grand Suenos. Don't tell anyone but it can not be that exclusive if they let us in.
We have found that Cruisers and Mathematicians like to solve problems. Just as ML and Lewis were ready to go to shore, Martin ( Math Degree from the University of Chicago) asked if we would mind if he tried to fix the carburetor. "Its not working so go for it."
When we returned from complimentary margaritas and ceveche, we saw the carburetor in pieces. Martin had discovered that the gas line to it was blocked somewhere. We sprayed WD 40 ( right up there next to duct tape) into every orifice and we thought it might now work. 30 minutes later we had a engine that was working better than new. Martin was so excited about his accomplishment, he took us out to dinner!
We are anchored here about ΒΌ mile off a 2 mile beach. We traveled 41 miles today. Tomorrow we head for La Paz. We have gone about 980 miles since leaving MDR. La Paz will make it an even 1000!
Happy Problem Solving to you until we Blog again.
The Merry Lee
