Dingy Dock
13 November 2010 | Marina de La Paz
Hola Amigos,
La Paz is a unique cruising area. In fact it probably is one of the most Cruiser friendly areas in the world. While Marina de La Paz has a few power boats it really has only one Sport's Fisher ( named "Basic Instinct", go figure). We count 60 sticks (masts) in the Marina.
In addition to the Marina being a Cruiser's marina, there are a couple of large anchorages which have about 45 sailboats. Staying in a marina in Mexico costs about the same as a marina in the States. Anchoring out is free. We have told our readers before that there are all kinds of cruisers with different budgets. If you anchor out and eat beans, rice and tortillas you probably can survive on $100 a month. That is a little minimalist for our taste but doable if you bought a lot of Enron stock for your retirement.
These boats still need to get to shore for food and water occasionally. They need to get to shore a lot more often if they have a dog. Their docking station is the Marina's dingy dock.
There is another boat that is anchored outside the entrance to La Paz that is called "Octopus". Instead of buying Enron stock, that owner (Paul Allen) started Microsoft. The boat is 416 ft long. It has 2 helicopters, 2 submarines and a BB court( not sure if half or full). $100 does not go far on that boat but they also use the dingy dock here.
But you have to feel sorry for poor Paul. You would think that since he is the 37th richest person in the world that he would be top dog here in La Paz. Not so. The "Top Dog" honors go to Carlos Slim Helu, Numero Uno on the Forbes list, whose boat "Tully" is docked here. Maybe that's why Allen anchors out.
We have gone somewhat full circle because the first time we went cruising was in La Paz about 34 years ago.
Happy Full Circle Trails to you until we Blog again.
