On the seas again

12 December 2014 | Blk Pt to Gerogetown
Greg/ mary sunny with slight breeze
The goal for today is Georgetown, 54 miles away. We set the alarm so we can get an early start. After a quick breakfast we pull the anchor off of the sandy bottom in this turquoise clear water.

There are some waves coming out of the west as we turn into the rising sun. The incoming tide is very strong. The west flowing seas and the east flowing tide cause the seas to churn. We feel like we are in a washing machine during the agitation cycle. With the engine running at it’s max RPM we going nowhere fast at about 2 knots. Fifteen minutes later we finally pass thru Dotham Cut and are in the Exuma sound.

The water has turned from the beautiful turquoise to deep dark inky blue. The depth has gone from 9 feet to 3000 feet. We have a slight wind from the NE. The sails are up and we are still forced to run the engine in order to make any speed.

Flying fish jump out of the water and fly off 200 feet before splashing back into the sea. We are disappointed that we have not seen any dolphins or other marine animals. The flying fish become our entertainment. 7 hours later we reach Georgetown.

Georgetown is the most popular area for cruisers. 300-350 boats anchored here is not uncommon. We were looking forward to spending a night at the Exuma Yacht Club Marina. Last year the marinas were where the action was. As we pull into the marina there are only two other boats here. What a disappointment. All of the cruisers here just anchor out on the side opposite the marina and not near the town. Cruising is always a learning experience.
