Memories
23 February 2016 | Iles Des Saintes
Sunny and calm
Memories are those special vaults in our brains that hold things form the past. They sometimes get distorted, blown out of proportion or even fade away. I had remembered Iles Des Saintes as one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean and I was worried that I had remembered it as more than it really was. I was pleasantly surprised that it was as I had remembered it. Maybe not as quaint as it was but still a wonderful gem.
My brother and his wife arrived on Wed. and were sailed the next day for Marie Galant. Christoper Columbu ran out of his favorite saints to name the island he had discovered so he named this one after his boat the Santa Maria. This is still a small sleepy island that relies on fishing and raising sugar cane. We spent two nights here before sailing to The Saintes.
There are Forts to hike up to, Beaches to lounge on, and places to snorkel. All of these are in a setting of red tile roofs just like in France. Great food, cheap wine, and an idyllic setting make this a magical place. We will spend a few nights here before heading back to the Marina for my family to fly back to the cold and snow.
