Last moon over Mexico

19 July 2015 | Ensenada
Chip
We arrived in Ensenada at 2300 on Saturday after a 40 1/2 hour passage from Turtle Bay - 278 miles. We got some great weather help from Barritt Neal (Serendipity), Bill Lilly (Moontide), Pete Curran (former OCFA fire captain/paramedic and current NHC dude), and, of course, Victoria who sent not just the weather but her much appreciated sweet words of encouragement! When there were 2 tropical depressions forecasted to become hurricanes nearby, I hired Commanders Weather to also assist. While it was nice talking to knowledgable people at Commanders about the weather, they didn't tell me anything new and, in fact, very strongly recommended we not depart Turtle Bay when we did. The ride up was one of the nicest of the 4 bashes I've done. Yes there was 6 hours of really really crappy conditions with water flying over the Bimini but the other 32 hours were comfortable. And, while Hurricane Delores is indeed twisting slightly to the east as of this writing, it is over 300 miles SW of Turtle Bay - we are now almost 300 miles NORTH of Turtle Bay in 64 degree water. I'll never know if leaving when we did was a foolish risk and we just got lucky (I don't think so - there really is no substitute for one's "gut feeling" and hearing from experienced people who have each made this exact passage a dozen times or more in my opinion). I will tell you this - I'm dang glad to be 60 miles from the US border and within walking distance of Hussongs Cantina! Two more hops and MissTeak will be resting in her Dana Point slip after another 8 month Mexican adventure!

Not sure what's ahead for us. After 41 years of owning sailboats and sailing MissTeak on 3 extended trips into Mexico, we sold her and have purchased a powerboat. We're planning to spend the next several months learning the boat, building inventory and getting used to the roar of twin 450hp [...]
