Leg 6 - over halfway home

Abreojos is noted for its frequent high winds and is one of the locations with a prominent point, which greatly influences the local weather. As forecasted, the wind blew hard during the afternoon and into the evening but started dropping around 2300. At 0030 we hoisted anchor and headed for Asuncion with some left-over wind and sea state (read boat rolling from side to side or slamming into the oncoming 4 to 6’ waves) but a couple of hours later the ocean changed to pond-like conditions for the remainder of this passage. After fixing a few items (and confirming that we’d not dumped our fresh water tanks again…) we hailed a passing Panga for a ride to shore. Asuncion is a cool little town with several tiendas, a couple of hardware stores, a few small restaurants and a significant fishing operation (hence the Pangas). Our prearranged return ride didn’t workout for whatever reason so we wandered down the beach, at the suggestion of a guy who’d seen us from his home and came over to see if we needed help, to the fish loading area (one of my absolutely favorite things to see…). Following a brief exchange of Spanish, English and jesters – everyone understood what we were requesting. And, in typical Mexican fashion, absolutely it was possible and, in fact, not a problem at all – we just needed to wait a couple of minutes while the unloaded 40 to 50 huge Yellow Tail from our “taxi” (can you picture what is sloshing about in the bottom of this boat – I know I need a beer but therapy might also be required….). Now there is crashing surf and this Panga is about 20 yards up the beach from the water. We are told to get in along with the 3 member crew and I’m wondering how we are getting to the water when a pick-up truck rushes over, backs into the boat and begins pushing us at high speed across the sand and into the water. The “tillerman” drops the engine and away we go – this was not their first time to the big city!! Just another case of genuine Mexican hospitality! Off to Turtle Bay at midnight – big wind on the way, we expect to be there until late Friday or early Saturday and, have therefore, loaded the Engal with beer!
