Better than best laid plans!
18 July 2013 | Antonio's Porch - Turtle Bay
Chip
So we arrive at Antonio's place only to find it closed - he's split to La Paz for a few days (I guess the windfall of our beer drinking the night before financed a quick trip to the big city....) but not to worry, the owner of the place next door (his father) has the keys and full access to the beer. Let the party begin with the crew of Our Shangri-La, Traveler, and MissTeak at the ready! It doesn't take long and Antonio's small beer refrigerator is empty - again, not to worry as there is a small tienda a short walk away. To our surprise, Fernanda (from Our Shangri-La) suddenly appears with a case of beer and a couple of bags of chips and she doesn't even drink! Fernanda, and her sister Carla (who does drink...), are both Mexican and fluent in Spanish. Soon we're having a grand old time and making a fair amount of noise when we notice an older Mexican gentleman with a cane standing in the background. Carla invites him (Hector) to join us which he reluctantly does - turns out he's a retired Mexican airplane pilot (he's very elderly - probably 90 or so) and he's got a mitt full of stories about the old Turtle Bay and the Baja 50 years ago. Then another case of beer appears.... Hector offers to make a bowl of Conche Ceviche for the crowd and shuffles off to his house for the supplies. While he's a way another sailboat crew spots us on the patio and joins the party - turns out they are from a Cat named Neos. Jack and I met them 3 years ago in San Blas and, along with the sailboat 40 Love, did a daylong river/jungle cruise together. It's a small world indeed! Another case of beer "appears!" Hector returns with the fixings and, along with Carla (this girl can pack away the cerveza!!) whips up the Ceviche, which I'm told, is excellent! The stories from all corners continue, Hector, who at first was very reserved, is having a ball - he's now strutting about the patio sins cane. Another case of beer arrives on scene. With the food and beer gone and the patio free of trash, we now have to get to the dinghies and back to our boats. This will involve walking across the beach at high tide, out a 2000' bird crap covered pier with no rails, down a rusty set of stairs held onto said pier with old rope and then dropping into a dinghy that is surging with the surf - all of this in the dark! Very fun evening in Turtle Bay, and the kinda night KT would have very much enjoyed, comes to a safe conclusion!!
