Ensenada to Bahia Tortuga
21 November 2014 | Turtle Bay
Chip
Our intended leisurely cruise to Turtle Bay was preempted by an unfavorable weather forecast. So we tossed the lines in Ensenada @ 0400 on November 19th and headed toward San Quintin planning to by-pass Colnett. As the day progressed the ride only got better so around noon we decided to skip San Quintin and go straight to Turtle Bay. This would put us ahead of the weather by 2 days. As night came the following wind and sea increased but our wing and wing run wasn't too uncomfortable for our first overnight passage in awhile. Electing to go on the lee side of Isla Cedros to put us out of the wind and, mostly, the swell that had been tossing us round for 20 hours. The next 4 hours were very comfortable and the air was HOT! At the end of Cedros is the Dewey Channel. Having passed through this channel 4 times in the past without incident, I wasn't overly concerned about the various sources indicating this section of water can be "difficult!" We entered the so-called channel in the dark and were soon met with very unpleasant conditions; Wind @ 20 from the north, 2 knot current from the south, 6' swell from one-side of the island (NE) and another 6' swell from other side of the island (NW) - all converging at our location (did I mention it was dark...). The next couple of hours were wild to say the least. At 1930 the wind died and as we rounded one of the prominent points near the Turtle Bay entrance the the swell disappeared. 40 hours and 22 min from lines dropped in Ensenada to anchor down in Turtle. Rest, fuel, roam the town, check weather and head to Asuncion early Saturday if all looks right.
