For our Anniversary we found a white sandy beach which, as far as the eye could see in any direction, was deserted. The turquoise water was 80 and the warm breeze was light – so up went our beach chairs, table and umbrella for a few hours with my sweetie and some ice cold cerveza! The next morning we left Mag Bay for San Jose del Cabo. The conditions were very nice for the 180 mile trip which we made in 26 ½ hours (Jack, Dan and I last did this leg going north in 42 hours in not so ideal conditions….). Just after sunset for some unknown reason, we lost our GPS signal which meant for a short time we hadn’t a clue where we were or where we were headed. We have about 6 different back-ups so it really wasn’t that big of a deal but it was concerning. After a couple of reboots of our systems all was good. So we settled into our 3-hour night shifts. Around 2AM KT yells down the hatch for me to “GET UP HERE NOW!” I fly out of bed to find a huge net fishing boat 100 to 200 yards off our bow pushing in. KT tells me the boat has been pushing her for some while and that she’s been altering her course to keep distance. It was when the boat turned perpendicular to us and charged that she yelled for me. I look at our course and see that KT has almost done a 180 degree turn so I slow the boat. The fishing boat goes in front of us, I turn sharp behind and go back onto our course. The net boat continues to turn and soon disappears over the horizon. All I can figure is that we were encroaching on the nets and their actions were to push us away from that. No radio traffic from either of us. To say it was unnerving is an understatement – KT was slightly tense after the encounter and since she was unable to sleep, I got a little more shut-eye (hey – this kind of thing has got to workout for someone…). All good in Puerto los Cabos now. Be here for 3 days and, if the weather forcast holds, we’ll jump to the mainland early Wednesday morning (40 hour crossing).
