Victoria de Durango

Our trip to Durango was a great experience! Starting with the 31/2 hour bus ride through the Sierra Madre mountains on a recently complete highway which was just spectacular. This new road consists of 61 tunnels (some VERY long) and 115 bridges. One of these bridges, the Puente Baluarte (photo above - professionally taken, ours didn't do el puente justice!) has drawn the worlds attention and is in the Ginness Book of World Records for the tallest bridge in the world! Finding words to describe the bridge and it's related canyon view is impossible for me - breath taking is the best I can do!! The city of Durango (actually named Victoria de Durango which KT just loved!) was interesting. Our first impression wasn't all that favorable with more graffiti than the walls of the LA River and a mitt full of beggars and con artist gathered around the main square at the beautiful Cathedral. But as we explored and got to see things a little deeper our first impression were changed. The people in Durango are some of the friendliest we've come across - smiles, stopping to ask if he needed help, bending over backwards to make us feel welcome. This is a very old mining city that is in transition to a tourist destination. The older part of town is very similar to old town Mazatlan and San Miguel de Allende (colonial) but much larger. We were very comfortable walking around at any time of the day. Everything here (food, taxi, goods) is considerably less expensive than Mazatlan and Mazatlan is pretty cheap! We only hung here for 2 days and, if we did it again, we'd stay a little longer, do a couple of out of town excursions and make certain we were here on a Sunday when the main square comes alive with music and food! Weather starting to look good for a jump to the Baja next Monday (3/9) which gives plenty of time for at least 1 more round of golf!!
