First Marlin!

After talking with Pete about Hurricane Carlos, which has formed to the south of us, and getting weather information from our friend Barritt who is back in San Diego with Serendipity, we decide to move further south toward La Paz. This meant moving along a little faster than originally planned but we wanted to be within 6 hours of La Paz by June 14th just in case we needed to bust loose and run for the barn (in this case, Marina de La Paz). So we swung into Agua Verde for a couple of days and had a delightful dinner on the beach with the co-op ladies. Then, this morning we headed to Evaristo which is 43 miles from Agua Verde. For my angler friends, it was at this point that I decided this 6 hour passage was the time and place to stop the fishing and to do some catching. I pulled out the "big gun" that Jack gave me (Gold Penn International 50W with 150 lb test and a new 200 lb leader), I carefully inspected the various lures on hand and selected a redheaded rapella for task this morning. For rig #2, I affixed my trusty (and rusty) cedar plug to my old Penn (also rusty) that rides on an old pole held together with rescue tape (seriously). With the water at 81 and flat, I tossed in both lures. It wasn't long until the old rusty Penn pulling the rusty cedar plug started singing and I mean singing! Then from the water burst a good sized Marlin - I could just barely spot my rusty cedar plug hanging from its mouth! The big gun, with the sparkling silver and red lure, sat silent. After 30 minutes of fighting with this fish (pictures to follow when we have internet) with our sails still up, the fish spit out the unharmed cedar plug (man that rescue tape is amazing....). I'm guessing this fish was about 125 pounds and, not counting the bill, was about the size of the lovely Victoria (aka KT). Major fun with the thing flying all over the place and it was my first Marlin (on our 2010 trip I was skunked but KT and Di each caught a Marlin and Jack hooked a huge sailfish)! 30 minutes later the "big gun" starts chattering - the 25lb bonita put up a good fight but was no match for this trusty rod and reel fully capable of hoisting our 65 pound CQR anchor! Here for one night then moving to Isla San Francisco (6 hours short of La Paz) for a couple of days where we'll get more weather and decide what's next.
