Grab a Beer, Run like Hell!
09 April 2016 | Anegada, BVI
Hurricane Evacuation Plan: 1) Grab a beer and 2) Run like hell! Not a bad plan if you are at the Cow Wreck Beach and Beach Bar on Anegada!
Cow Wreck Beach and Beach Bar is located on the far northwest end of Anegada. This beach is one of the most pristine, and spectacularly beautiful beaches of the BVI. You will find only a handful of beachgoers, if even that. The fried flounder sandwich and rib platter were delicious for lunch and the drinks thirst quenching!
Having been to Cow Wreck Beach many times, but never knowing how it got its name, sparked my curiosity, so naturally I Googled it and found this information. In the late 1800's, before plastic, Velcro and even zippers were around, cow bone was used to make buttons, and many other items of the day. It was an in-demand commodity, to be sold, not discarded. Off the beach, a ship strayed a bit close, found trouble in the reef, and sank. The ships cargo - a load of cow bones - was lost and for years afterwards, those bones were swept ashore in the surf, spawning the name, Cow Wreck Beach.
