Touristas in Cabo
14 January 2011 | Cabo San Lucas
Today was 30 C!!
We made it to Cabo San Lucas!! Amazing, we are at the very tip of the Baja Peninsula, and have been in Mexico for just under a month.
It was a beautiful harbour to pull into after dark, with the city lights silhouetting the famous rock formations on the cape. Once we pulled into the bay itself there was pounding music coming from one of the bars on the shore as we anchored. The noise didn't keep us up though as we were tired from the 36-hour trip; about 22 hours of smooth sailing 10-15 kts, then a sudden 20-25 with steep seas as we passed though the "gap winds" which blow over a saddle in the peninsula from the Sea of Cortez; then 10 hrs of motoring in a flat calm under the hot sun. Amazing how fast the ocean can change her moods.
This is a spectacular place - finally HOT! But the anchorage is rolly and a dinghy ride to the harbour means running a gauntlet of jet-skis, pangas and parasailing boats. Mike loves this and is really getting into the freeform Mexican water traffic patterns, trying to surf panga waves while Marni cowers, shrieking in the bow. Prices are high on shore. A slip for our boat would be $110 US per night!!! We have shared the anchorage with several cruise ships, which come in for the day and pull out at night. At sunset, the party boats come out loaded with tourists sucking back tequila, music 'bomping' and lights flashing. We wish we could see the action on board as the DJs can be heard telling people to "booty shake, real nasty!"
Despite the crazy tourists the locals are friendly and the harbour and beaches are gorgeous and clean. Today we checked out Lovers' Beach near the Cape rock formations and went snorkeling, just a few feet from the beach and near many of other tourists and tour boats we saw all kinds of beautiful fish and lots of them.
We've been here for about four days now, resting and waiting for the strong northerlies in the Sea of Cortez to abate. We will soon head back northward, toward La Paz!
Lots of love to everyone at home. We love reading your blog comments! Miss you all but not the weather at home! XO M&M
