Punta de Mita
16 February 2011
Feb10
We headed south from Chacala sailing about 20 of the 30 miles to Punta de Mita, which is the northern edge of Banderas Bay. Punta de Mita is a major surf destination, and we anchored in front of the town with about four different surf breaks all around us. We were surprisingly comfortable for the two nights we were there, considering the large waves breaking on the beaches. Mike used the board he bought in Santa Barbara and Marni rented a soft-top to surf (or at least try to surf) “El Anclote,” the beginners’ break, which was a lovely series of consistent and gentle waves with pretty warm (22degree C) water.
Next stop was La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, where we arrived in the large anchorage on Feb 12. This is a beautiful little town that caters to cruiser: easy shore access, showers in the marina (yay), and lots of music, restaurants, markets and general fun to be had. It is also fun to meet up with some of the people we have seen elsewhere along the way – this spot seems to keep people for a few weeks at a time. We can see the high-rises of Puerto Vallarta on the other side of the bay but here things still feel very laid back. We’ll probably hang out here for a while!
