AT LAST

LIL
So I know some of you may have been thinking that this was all a big farce..and that we never had any intentions of leaving port. But..we did and we did. We are now on our way to Thursday Island. However, if you're reading this blog religiously, or occasionally, or stumbled on it accidently, hopefully, it won't be all that interesting for awhile. Long distance cruising is often described like war: Hours of sheer boredom interspersed with moments of sheer terror. That said, countries still go to war and sailors still go to sea. We're hoping for boredom (or at least I am).
Our pic of the day is our final, final basket of freshies. Buddies who have cruised with us in the past may be wondering, 'what's with the basket?'. We usually just use a hanging net for freshies which don't require refrigeration, but since we are stocking up for many days, we stole the idea from our rally friends, Dennis and Helen, and decided to buy a basket. After nixing a $37 laundry basket in a small shop, Ann found this one for $3.50 in, of all places, K-Mart. Yes, they still have K-Mart here. Wal-Mart hasn't run them out of business....yet. And, I thought I was the great bargain hunter!!!
I read this blog update to Ann, before posting it and...she said I would be remiss in not mentioning that I, too had found a bargain: a book for 25 cents.
They say necessity is the mother of invention. As we have mentioned previously, we have some concerns about being able to get LPG cooking fuel in Indonesia (hence the pre-baking of hundreds of cookies). On the menu del dia for dinner, we decided to thaw Ken's pre-made (but not cooked) meat loaf. Since a meat loaf takes 1 hour in the oven, we thought, why not try the microwave? Digging out an old microwave cookbook from 1984, from some previous device, we looked up cooking meat loaf and voila: 30 minutes at power level 7. Of course, one can't use metal in the MW, so I found a silicone bowl, fashioned a meat mound and nuked it. It was delicious...and so my next project is to figure out what else we can use the MW for. We may end the trip with full LPG tanks!!!
We will most likely be out of wi-fi/internet service for awhile, so don't be concerned if you don't hear from us on email.
