CHECK ONE MORE FROM MY LIST OF LIFE

27 May 2015 | CHANIA, CRETE
LIL
So...here's the conundrum of blogging: if you're busy and have lots to write about, you have no time to write. If you have lots of time on your hands, you have nothing to write about.

That said, I have lots to write about, and finally a few minutes to spare.

I successfully navigated the 5 airports and 4 flights to get to Crete, with no lasting scars but $200 poorer, thanks to the overweight charges on the (not) discount 30 minute Ryanair flight from Athens to Crete. They say discretion is the better part of valor...so I won't write anything else about it.....but.....if you're ever thinking of using Ryanair, shoot me an email and I'll give you all the gory details.

My first blog was going to be the welcome dinner with my honey (Captain Ken) and our friend Jackie who lives here in Crete. However, the combo of my jet lag fatigue and 2 glasses of wine...and we forgot to take a pic.

The next day, Ken had a surprise: a Segway tour through the old town. Yes, a Segway experience had been on my list of life...and where better to do it than navigating the very narrow streets, meandering tourists, bicyclists, dogs, cars, and the seawall with the menacing looking water. We did get 15 minutes of training and off we went. What fun!!!!!!

For the next activity of the day, Ken drove up into the mountains, lunching at a lovely cafe overlooking the White mountains still showing snowcaps, and down, stopping at the ancient city of Aptera. And then, back to reality:....a trip to the Carrefours supermarket to do some more provisioning for our upcoming sailing trip. I was delighted. I do love shopping in foreign places. We had been to a Carrefours in Papeete, Tahiti...and it was amazing...bigger that a Costco. This was the little sister, but still quite large. Unfortunately, I discovered the first item I neglected to bring with me: a Greek translation book. Not only is the language totally foreign to us, but the Greek alphabet makes it even more difficult to figure out. With a little detective work, we were able to buy most of what was on our list, I think. Anyway, it gives new meaning to the expression "It's all Greek to me."

The day was topped off with a wonderful dinner and evening at the home of Jackie and James, with their son Alex.
