Lots of Seals in Mistake Island
18 July 2013 | Mistake Island, Down East Maine
Donna
We had a great sail to Mistake Island. We started by motoring, switched to having all four of our sails up, and then finished up by using the spinnaker, main and mizzen. We really enjoyed the quiet of sailing! The approach into the anchorage was very cool – you basically go through a canal of high rocks on both sides, around the back of the island and into the anchorage. When we got to the spot we were going to anchor in another sailboat was already there, in the prime location. We had to motor around a bit to find a place that would be far enough from them but also not too close to the rocks at low tide. We found a decent spot which luckily kept us just far enough away from the other sailboat in the middle of the night when the thunderstorm hit.
Today the weather is gorgeous. The temperature is in the low 70’s and the sky is a brilliant blue. The seals are out in force sunning themselves on the rocks, until you try to get close enough to take a picture then they all slide into the water. We were able to catch the picture above from our dinghy with the engine turned off so we could sneak close enough to the seal without him hearing us. We dinghyed over to Mistake Island and managed to get up to shore. We weren’t positive if the tide was going down or coming up. With ten foot tides you have to worry about where your dinghy will be when you get back to it – will you be able to get back in it again. There is an old Coast Guard station and a lighthouse here so there is a boardwalk that goes through the grass. We also spent some time climbing on the rocks and checking out another group of seals across the water. When we got back to the dinghy we realized the tide was going down and it was a bit harder to get back into the dinghy. We managed though, not without a little trouble. All in a days’ work, right? No one got wet – and that is what is important.
