Another Foggy Sailboat Ride
24 July 2013 | Sheep Island, Blue Hill Bay, Maine
Donna
Yesterday it rained and was foggy all day long so we stayed where we were and just relaxed for the day. This morning we woke up to beautiful sunshine though. We took our time getting ready since we only needed a couple of hours to get to our next destination and then pulled the anchor up and left Valley Cove. When we got outside of Southwest Harbor there were lots of small sailboats tooling around... kids learning to sail. Then I realized the small sailboats were starting to disappear. Just like that the fog was rolling in. By the time we got past most of the boat traffic we could not see a thing. Bill turned on our automatic fog horn and we checked the radar, watched the AIS, and searched through the fog for other boats. When we saw a large sailboat go by like a ghost ship I got a little nervous. We always use our fog horn when the visibility is really low but we are definitely the exception. There are boats out there but you wouldn’t know it. The law is to blow your horn but all that apparently means is that if there is a collision we would be less to blame since we are following the law, so comforting…
We are getting really good at negotiating the Maine waters in the fog. A couple of times it lifted and we could relax a little but by the time we got to our anchorage it was getting foggy again. Bill wanted to explore Sheep Island while it was still high tide so we wouldn’t have to be so concerned about the dinghy, but we couldn’t see the island so we had to wait. Eventually the island came back into view and we went over and climbed the rocks and explored a little. We just went along the top of the island. The picture above shows some of the rocks we climbed over. We were surprised how clear the water was. Not quite like the Bahamas, but close.
Tomorrow we are going to take a mooring in Blue Hill so we can get ready to pick our grandkids up at the airport on Friday. Our cruising friends that live there are lending us their car again. We’ll be able to stock up at the supermarket and go to the Laundromat without carrying everything for miles!
