Our First Dinghy Raft Up
02 August 2013 | Warren Island, Islesboro, Maine
Donna
It rained all last night and this morning. It had mostly stopped by the time we left Belfast but it certainly wasn’t a very nice day. We motored the whole way to Islesboro. There are a lot of boats anchored here in two different anchorages. We are anchored directly behind the ferry dock. We chose this spot because it is closer to the public dinghy dock where we will take our dinghy tomorrow when the SSCA Gam we are going to is on the land. This evening there was a dinghy raft up cocktail party over in the other anchorage. There is a boat on a mooring and the raft up was tied to that boat. The dinghies just kept coming and tying to each other, as you can see in the picture above. That is just half the group, it was more like thirty or forty dinghies! Everybody brought their own drink and something to eat that could be passed around from dinghy to dinghy. I wondered how you managed to get your serving tray or bowl or whatever you brought your food in back, but I figured it would work out somehow. As it turns out my basket of brownies was the first to be emptied. Someone held it up on the other side of the raft up and yelled “Whose empty basket is this?” I waved my arms and my basket found its way back to our dinghy. Lots of good food came past our dinghy. It was all very interesting and fun. We met some new people and also talked to people we already knew.
On the way to the raft up we met another couple from Annapolis who we had apparently met at an Annapolis Gam in the past. Turns out he’s been reading my blog for a while since our cruising experience is very close to what they have just started doing themselves. On the way back from the raft up we stopped at their boat for more drinks and some nice conversation. It started raining again while we were there but we talked long enough for the rain to stop so we could get back to our boat. It is raining again now but hopefully it will be clear tomorrow.
