Still Living In Vero Beach

We had hoped that we could leave Vero Beach tomorrow because our Amazon package was supposed to be delivered today. Well, really it was supposed to be delivered last Wednesday. Now it looks like we’ll be lucky if it comes tomorrow. So, for now, we are living in Vero Beach. I guess I shouldn’t complain. There are regular showers and all my laundry is done. The busses are free and drop you off right in front of a multitude of restaurants and shops. Yesterday we took two busses to get to my doctor’s appointment. They have an interesting system. All the bus routes get to the main hub at thirty minutes past the hour. If you need to change busses it will be there. The route to the medical center went through some neighborhoods that looked more like the Bahamas on our way back to the hub. I guess, just like in many cities, middle class people don’t take the bus to the doctors in Vero Beach.
We were lucky to get the appointment with the ENT for Monday morning. My ear infection has gotten a bit better but I didn’t want to leave the country until I knew I was actually making progress. We managed to get to the appointment exactly on time, and that was just luck. We had no control of the bus schedule. When we checked in at the desk they said, “Oh we have you for 8:50am tomorrow morning.” No!! I wasn’t going to accept that. I was not wrong – they told me Monday. Luckily they didn’t even argue, they just made it happen. We didn’t even have to wait very long. The doctor was very good. He didn’t agree with how the doctor in the walk-in clinic treated me but he told me that my infection was gone and now my Eustachian tubes were just clogged and it would just take a bit more time. I can hear a lot better now so I can tell I am getting better.
We’ve had some rain and some cold, cold for Florida that is, but we’ve had a chance to walk around the town some. There is some incredible vegetation here. The picture above shows me standing next to one of the many beautiful palm trees that line the streets near the marina.
Tonight we were standing at the bus stop in the business district just at dusk. We had gone to Panera for dinner and then to the supermarket to stock up maybe one last time before we go to the Bahamas. Bill looked up in the sky and said “Hey, what’s that?” It looked like a fire ball meteor or something. Then he realized it was a rocket launch out of Cape Canaveral. We were able to see it for quite a number of minutes. We could even see the different stages coming off of the rocket. It turns out it was a private launch by SpaceX or the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation. It was really spectacular to see. If we had been back on the boat we would definitely have been inside hiding from the bugs and we would have missed it completely!
We still aren’t sure when we are leaving for the Bahamas or where we going to go first. I’m sure we will know before we get there – we are keeping our options open.
