Spending the Day at Gilligan’s Island
18 March 2014 | Gilligan's Island, Puerto Rico
Donna
This morning we slept in and took our time getting ready to go since it was only about an hour to our next destination. We are spending the day at Gilligan’s Island. It is officially Cayo Aurora but the cruising guides use the more common, or Americanized name. It’s named that because it apparently reminds people of the island on the old TV series. Also there was apparently a fisherman who looked like the Gilligan character on the show. The ferries that bring people over spell it as Gulligan though. We were really looking forward to it until we realized it’s just a place that lots and lots of people come to on the ferry and spend the day using the picnic facilities and playing in the water. You can see in the picture above that it’s very nice, but it’s not at all remote and incredible. We didn't spend much time on the island.
We have been anchoring the same place as the two boats we met up with in La Paguera the other day. They got here first and told us we would be disappointed with the island. They were right. They also told us that there was a restaurant on the other shore that they were going to for lunch. We decided to join them. It’s very nice to see how cheaply you can eat here in Puerto Rico after the places we have been up until now. We each had the lunch special, rice and beans and pork, chicken or fish for only $4.99! Bill and I even shared a pina colada.
We spent the rest of the day relaxing since we are going to try and leave at 4:00am tomorrow morning. Our next destination is Ponce which is supposed to have all the shopping and boat supplies we could possibly need. It only takes about three hours to get there but, as we have seen, it’s a lot windier after 7:00am!
