Monkey Island – Bad Anchorage
30 March 2014 | Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico
Donna
Our trip along the coast of Puerto Rico this morning was a little rough but not too bad. We got to Cayo Santiago, otherwise known as Monkey Island by mid morning. As we were about to turn into the anchorage Bill mentioned that one of the details he read about the anchorage was that it could be rolly. Not our favorite. This was where we were staying for the night though so we figured we would deal with it. We first tried to use a bridle to turn the boat into the swell and it seemed to work but after a while it didn't really work anymore. Then we put up the mizzen sail, which usually helps. That too helped for a while but right now the boat is rolling back and forth and will probably be doing it for the rest of the night. Lucky us… It’s not surprising that we are alone here.
There are all kinds of signs that tell you not to go on the island. There are over a thousand Rhesus monkeys that live on this island. Apparently the monkeys bite. They were part of a research study and are still being studied now. Earlier today we thought we heard a gunshot followed by a lot of shrieking monkeys. We aren't quite sure what that was about. We did take a dinghy ride along the shore to see what we could see from a safe distance. We did see quite a few monkeys running around. In the picture above you can see what the monkeys look like. They are pretty cute!
I’m sure we will be very ready to leave here in the morning. We are going to head to Vieques, which is another island off of Puerto Rico. We are hoping for a calmer anchorage tomorrow!
