A Tourist Destination during Spring Break
31 March 2014 | Esperanza, Vieques, Puerto Rico
Donna
When you are cruising you aren't really aware of the rest of the world and what date it is. Maybe occasionally… we did know when the Super Bowl was. When we first got into Puerto Rico someone told us that it was Spring Break for the next few weeks. That hasn't really affected us too much. There were some Spring Breakers on our Zipline tour but most of the places we've gone have not been tourist destinations. Today that changed. We are in Esperanza on the island of Vieques. You can see a picture of the town above. We had an easy motor sail here and we are anchored in the harbor outside of the town. It’s not really crowded but everyone here is young and in bathing suits. We walked around the town a bit this afternoon and decided to sign up for a nighttime kayak tour through the bio-luminescent bay called Mosquito Bay. The anchorage is not super calm but Bill is experimenting with other ways to deal with the rolling and the boat is pretty stable right now.
We just got back from our nighttime Bio Bay kayak tour and it was pretty good. The bio-luminescence is caused by tiny microorganisms in the water and you can see them light up when you run your hands or feet through the water. They don’t let anyone swim in the bay. The bay is only at about sixty percent of its highest bio-luminescence because of temperatures and probably over use. There are a lot of tours that go there every day. It’s a big bay though and we didn't really come close to any of the other tours. There were six double kayaks in our tour, and for once we weren't the oldest! It wasn't Spring breakers on this tour either. It wasn't quite as good as we expected but we were really glad we decided to take the tour.
Tomorrow we aren't sure if we will go to one more anchorage in Vieques or head to the next island of Culebra.
