Living it up in the land of the giant pamplemousse

29 April 2010 | Hanamoenoa, Tahuata, FP
Andrew
The highlight of our stay on Hiva Oa was the road trip. While rather expensive by north American rental prices, the availability of a Toyota Hilux diesel 4x4 was a great opportunity to explore the two of the island's three roads. And why do Toyota inflict Tundras and Tacomas on North American truck buyers?? We went to the far end of the island, visiting the same bay we had anchored in upon arrival, eating a picnic on the waterfront, indulging in NZ ice creams at the little store, and getting caught in a downpour at the archeological site. Managed to pick our own bananas beside the road, visit an orchard where we bought even more bananas, helped the proprietor pick giant pamplemousse (grapefruit) - about 12 were all we could carry, and sampled smoked bananas. All the locals we encountered were super friendly and welcoming, and the homes on the island, while humble, showed lots of care and obvious pride. The roads are reminiscent of back country roads in NZ - lots of gravel surface and swtichback/hairpin bends. Morgan flew out on Sunday 25th, and we were most grateful for his joining us on the passage, and imparting lots of sailing advice, and regailing us with all his stories and anecdotes. As Max said "nothing ends well with Morgan's stories". Morgan also introduced the boys to Soduku puzzles, which Sam seems to have a natural affinity for. We departed Atuona on Monday after one last visit to town for fresh baguettes and chocolate croissants. Instead of heading upwind to the famed Bay of Virgins on Fatu Hiva, we took the soft option and did the two hour sail across the channel to Hanamoenoa Bay on Tahuata to hang out for a few days with our buddy kid boats, "Capaz" and "Totem". We've enjoyed the calmest sleeping platform for a month, done lots of snorkeling, and relaxed for a couple of days. For Andrew it was forced relaxation, he got bitten by the windlass while anchoring, with a couple a gnarly cuts on one hand, and deep bruises on the other. And just as the cracked ribs suffered upon leaving Nuevo Vallarta had come right. If things happen in threes, then there could be trouble! Next stop, either Oa Pou or Nuku Hiva. Cheers, Team Mulan
