Hunters paradise

13May10 Roosevelt Harbor ( N, W)

We met up with Stan and Diane on N50 Crossroads in Ketchikan - they'd come up early and then left their boat there while flying south for their son's graduation. The three Nordhavns sat out a flow in Clarence Strait (steady winds of 45 knots with gusts to 58 knots at Lincoln Rock), and once the blow was over, we left on glassy seas again, heading north. We had no idea where we were going to spent the night, but made a long run up Clarence and took Stan's suggestion to spend the night in Roosevelt Harbor.

Roosevelt provided great protection and good holding for the hook, and it was less than 15 miles from Wrangell Narrows. There is a USFS dock at the head of the bay, very sturdy and about 35' long, along with a rough road for landing craft. There were about 20 old pickups and 4-wheel drives parked ashore, with batteries out and many with license plates that are 15 to 20 years expired. Apparently hunters leave their old vehicles there during the off season and use the old logging roads to get around when hunting. Great dingy dock, and you could tie up a 40 footer there if the USFS guys weren't using it. We saw no evidence of them while we were there.

Kermodei liked the long, rocky parking lot given he could stretch his legs, although after a half hour of vigorous ball chasing, he was clearly a bit sore-footed from the sharp stones. So I took him swimming off the dock to finish tiring him out. A tired Labrador is a happy Labrador - or at least his owners are.
