A Real Feel of Mexico

Jarretaderas is truly an authentic Mexican town, which is only a short 40 minute walk from the fancy all-inclusive resorts of Nuevo Vallarta. A couple of weeks ago our friends Ellen and Ian took us to venture this small Mexican town which we found to be very interesting and above all quite clean.
We located a wonderful Fruiteria that has a great selection of fresh fruit and produce sold at ridiculously low prices. We were informed just this week by a friendly local, that this vendor also supplies all the local hotels. If you don’t see what you want be sure to ask Oscar, a young man who works there and he will gladly go to the refrigerated room and bring out whatever you want if they have it: eg, asparagus, blueberries, strawberries and more. Also if the produce on the counter doesn’t meet your standards ask, Oscar and he will once again bring you fresh items from the back.
One of the interesting things we saw was a tortilla factory that starts right from grinding their own corn, we saw sacks of grain which they poured into a huge grinder, and then the flour was poured in a huge mixer. Next thing we saw was fresh tortillas rolling down a ramp and at the end a couple of young ladies would pile the tortillas into 1 kilo packages. ($15.00 pesos per kilo $1.20 Cdn.) They are still hot when you buy them. Great eating with peanut butter and jam for a quick snack.
The town has it’s usual center where locals meet in the evenings and on weekends. There are open street taco stands, barbecued chicken vendors and several tiendas on almost every street. We purchased one of the popular frozen fruit bars, which are made from either fresh fruit and water or fresh fruit and milk. Gave me an idea how to make use of over ripened berries in the summer.
Bob and I really enjoy visiting the small towns in Mexico. This way we get to see and experience what life in Mexico is truly all about. You don’t get the feel of Mexico staying at a fancy resort.
