Split to Hvar

28 October 2011 | Hvar, Croatia

After touring Split and Trogir with Tom and Carol Dawe, and waiting patiently for the SE Sirrocco winds to settle down, Necessity departed her berth at Sailing Club Split. Now the upside of the south wind was warm temperatures, the downside was wind on the nose. So we have been in a holding pattern. And if one is confined to port who better to spend the time with than the ever cheerful Dawes!
The facilities at Sailing Club Split were wonderful. Good showers and washrooms, internet service, excellent restaurant, small chandlery and sail loft. The main, genoa, and stay sail are repaired. New hatch and pilothouse window coverings made from UV resistant material. All at very low cost.
The old town of Split is an easy hike from the marina. We have a favourite restaurant called Konoba Fife serving traditional Croatian food right off the main waterfront of Split. Wonderful food served home style and at a very low cost of less than $10 Canadian per person including wine!
Split of course is the location of the Roman Emperor (284-305 BC) Diocletian’s Imperial Palace. Much of the structure remains along with numerous additions by later cultures like the Venetians. Split has a nice mix of old architecture and modern buildings. Most of the old quarter is pedestrian only. Very safe city, and as is common though out Croatia, no panhandlers.
Trogir is an old walled town a short bus ride away from Split. The old (1450) Venetian fortifications are in good condition.
Hvar, the main town on Otok Hvar, is about 30 miles from Split. An easy sail (motor) away. Med moored with the help of my expert crew and we were off exploring this picturesque fishing village turned tourist town. Now that it is late in the season we had all the courtyards and side streets to ourselves. The sunset and warm evening air was enjoyed by all.
