There was a good breeze which began early although, with the steep sides to the narrow bay, it was after 8 when the sun finally appeared. About 9 our boatman arrived with complimentary fresh warm bread and let go our line ashore. Rene had her swim in and the warm bread was a definite hit. Leaving the bay we headed west directly upwind for a couple of miles to the point called Karaburun, where we turned north and finally hoisted sail for the first time. Barb took the helm and steered for the first time – she is a natural! We had to dodge the Greek island of Simi which lies at the head of the large gulf called Hisaronu Korfezi (Gulf of Fortresses). The west Meltemi was up to 12 Knots at times and down to 3 at others. After reading the pilot book we selected a bay on the north shore about halfway in called Kuruca Buku which provided good shelter. After a couple of tries to anchor in one location which was foiled by weedy bottom, we moved to a spot near a beach where a camp operates in summer. It was a bit more crowded with boats and near a highway but otherwise comfortable. Everyone enjoyed swimming in the 26C crystal clear water. We watched the sunset and Barb created a fabulous Tikki Marsala chicken curry for dinner. Everyone was in bed early, still catching up from the hectic schedule on our tour of Turkey.
